I find that death scenes where the character who's about to die sees it coming, and can't do a thing about it, are the ones that really disturb me... The classic silent movie gag of a hapless heroine being tied to a log at the sawmill, or to the tracks of an approaching train... that sort of thing. Only, what with the lack of taste in Hollywood these days, the RCM never comes riding up to save her... People just get killed brutally. I actually had to walk out on that movie about the guy who went rock climbing and had to amputate his own arm. I just couldn't take it, even though I KNEW he made it back and lived.

Some of the ones that really got to me:

As a kid-
1. Donald Pleasance in Fantastic Voyage.
2. The Spider scene at the end of The Fly
3. The woman, asleep in her bed, whom King Kong mistakes for Fay Wray, and then casually drops to her death, 20 stories up.
4. Jayne Seymore getting her head popped off like a champagne cork in Frankenstein, The True Story.

As an adult-
1. The end of an episode of HBO's "The Hitchiker" where a guy is buried up to his neck in a road, and some drug lords run into his head in a low slung sorts car... while videotaping it for later blackmail purposes (they made his buddy drive, at gunpoint)
2. Something about that bathtub in "Silence of the Lambs"...
3. The death of the witness who was about to talk, in "Hot Fuzz" his head crushed inward by a peice of gothic stone decoration... (I almost walked out of the movie at that point.)
4. Pretty much any scene involving a wood chipper.
