I grew up loving the magazine along with his cousins EERIE & VAMPIRELLA. FM too, of course.
And I built up a very nice, fairly large of collection of them all. Unfortunately, I sold them all back in 1980 when I was 18 & thought that I'd "outgrown" them. Along with all the rest of my other comics & monster mags.
The only thing I didn't get rid of were my FANGORIAs & my CINEFANTASTIQUEs. Both of which I continued to buy, read & collect.
Anyhow, flash forward to a couple of years ago when I think my mid-life crisis hit & instead of desiring a sportscar & infidelity, I woke up one morning wanting to (re)collect monster magazines. So, I began my quest for as many old issues of CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN, FM & Marvel's MONSTERS OF THE MOVIES that I could get my hands on.
Now, about two years later I'm just a single issue ( #3 ) away from my long desired complete collection of the original 25 ( 26 with the '67 Annual ) issues of Beck's CoF, I've got four of the eight issue run of MotM & a nicely growing stack of almost 30 FMs as well.
Which, I'd hoped to build on when I went to a local comic books/toys/collectables show last Saturday morning. Unfortunately, there wasn't much in the way of monster mags there & the few things that they did have were a bit overpriced IMO.
I LOVE collecting old ( up to the early '80s ) horror/monster movie tie in paperbacks & I almost grabbed up a copy of the BRIDES OF DRACULA for $8. But, I kept looking before spending 'cause I'd brought limited funds with me.
That's when I found a pair of old CREEPY magazines in brilliant condition. #1 & #4.
The seller had $30 on the former & $15 on the latter, but I was able to talk him into taking $35 for both.
Now, years ago at a used bookshop I spotted two issues of CREEPY in #8 & #33 that happened to contain fav stories of mine from when I was a kid. They were only a couple of bucks, so I just bought 'em to read them away.
But now, by adding #1 & #4 to them, it's occured to me that I have the small beginings of a collection...
And, after checking out prices for back issues on E-Bay & elsewhere, I'm quite encouraged about the prospects of being able to build up a decent collection in a relatively short period of time.
