I also think David Peel is great in BRIDES. But it took a few years to get to that appreciation. When I was a kid, much as we loved the movie, my friends and I groused an awful lot about "that blond vampire....he didn't look like a vampire...he wasn't Dracula...he didn't even look like the other guy" (that other guy would be Christopher Lee, of course) Now, though, these aged eyes can see the terrifically evil, debauched, hyper-aristocratic vampire under the Troy Donahue-do. And it's pretty great stuff.

Gimmick 45RPM single sent out to promote the film, "inspired by" Brides of Dracula, which means it's got nothing to do with it.

Saw this again recently. What an awesome film, certainly one of Hammer's best efforts.
Cushing is as good as always. David Peel made a fine replacement for Lee, if only he'd continued making films I reckon he'd be as fondly remembered as Lee.
But the most memorable performances belong to scene stealers Martita Hunt & Freda Jackson. Freda especially was one scary lady & it's a shame she never got a rematch with Cushing. Maybe if Meinster had returned…
Few things don't work so well, like Van Helsing de-vamping himself, the lighted brazier in the abandoned mill & death by windmill sail shadow.
