Quote:I'm sure it was supposed to be a highlight, but the Village Girl Rising from the Grave scene had me laughing out loud, I'm afraid. First of all, a little bit of that noisy, laughing Greta goes a long way, so HER presence in the scene spoiled it right away; but beyond that, this corner of the "graveyard" is so obviously a tiny indoor set, and (my first laugh) the coffin is buried under about an inch of dirt -- the first good rain, or person walking across, would have exposed it. Third laugh -- the "bat." That whole scene was so high-school-play, I'm afraid my laugh lines still hurt a little.

Peel talked a bit about the reaction to the film, some of the things he did, etc. There is a poor b/w version of an old color photo taken of Carl and Peel that day. A David Peel interview is the real holy grail of Hammer reporting -- the sad thing is, if someone had approached him during that time of the late 70s & early 80s, before he passed away, I suspect he would have talked gladly. He seemed to be proud of the film (there is a photo of Peel on page 9 of our current issue #16, of Peel performing in a radio play around 1952 - with his real dark hair). As to his being gay? Well, the late Bill Kelley put that question to Peter Cushing in our BRIDES OF DRACULA issue back in 1999 (issue #14). Cushing, being the gentleman that he is, hemmed and hawed a bit, but pretty much admited Peel was. Certainly, according to some actors like Michael Ripper, there was a higher quotient of gay actors than in other walks of life in the UK during that period. Don't know exactly what that means except perhaps gay people find more satisfaction in acting than being a plumber or truck parts salesman?
This is a pretty fascinating thread with it's opinions, assumptions, theories, and so forth. I assume it was bad enough to hide ones sexuality in late 50's America, but it sounds even worse under British society. I could give a "rat's hoot" on whether David Peel was gay or not. His Baron Meinster persona was a iconic symbol of 60's horror just as Christopher Lee's. Those of us who ripened on the genre as youngsters will always have that visual etched in our heads. Now if your listening Klem, LSOH # 12, is that the BRIDES OF DRACULA issue ? I don't remember ever reading a small interview with Mr. Peel. And is there really nothing out there in print about his HAMMER thoughts? You ain't kidding when you say holy grail. Has everyone looked under every rock and every tombstone ? The man must have some relatives out there somewhere ? This I think would be a very cool archaeological hunt for one of you sleuths out there. Reading this thread, I thought it be a good time to revive this discussion. You know with all the gayness going around these days..............Not that there's anything wrong with that. And just for the record......I think BRIDES OF DRACULA is the pinnacle of the Hammer cannon.
