I recently picked up a lovely widescreen burn of Twins of Evil from darthbobdylan's Ebay store, and it was a real pleasure to see this one again... I don't think I've seen the third in Hammer's Karnstein trilogy in more than ten years, and even then it was a pan & scan VHS print. This print was a little soft here and there, but still very watchable on my 57" Toshiba TheaterWide, and I quickly remembered why I've always preferred this one to the others. I loved watching Cushing strut and preach with puritanical fire, and then stumble and rediscover his humanity toward the end. Mary and Madeleine Collinson carry themselves well enough throughout to nearly bely the exploitation angle in their casting, and Damien Thomas makes a wonderfully depraved Count Karnstein. Again we have the Karnstein vampires, generally unafraid of daylight (though apparently powerless during the day) and without many of the typical graveyard trappings - though they cast no reflection in the glass... Overall, I find this a very satisfying Hammer outing, and I would recommend this print to anyone looking for a decent copy to tide them over until we see a North American Anamorphic release...
