Mar 7 11 11:22 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I suppose I'd agree with Barrymore as the scariest, but the March version as --easily-- the best. The scenes between March and Hopkins are some of the best-acted scenes from any horror film ever.

If it is, I saw the Barrymore version on TV, but either they edited the spider scene out, or I was distracted while it was shown. March looked like a Neanderathal throwback to me, but this creation certainly ranks amongst valid early-30s screen Horrors. But is the Oscar-winning performance from March really the finest genre example of 1932? I can only think of 'Island of Lost Souls', 'Hounds of Zarroff' and possibly 'Mask of Fu Manchu' with Karloff as Horror contenders from this year, although there must surely be others........

HYDE was released in '31. On the last day of the year, I think. If you're comparing for Oscar purposes though, you should keep in mind that in those early days, Oscar eligibility wasn't determined on a January to December basis. I don't remember the exact dates used but it was something like July through June. And the awards years are listed as 1931-1932, 1932-1933 and such. I think '34 was the year they switched to a calender year. So if you're wanting to compare other Oscar-eligible performances, you'd have to know what film was released in what period of eligibility. I do know this--DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE and FRANKENSTEIN were released about 6 weeks apart at the end of '31, so they would be competing against each other for Oscars. Best Actor--Fredric March in DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, or ? in FRANKENSTEIN?

I like March's J & H, and his work in general (remembering that there was at least a partial concept back then of including an actor's other work that year in the consideration.) But Boris' Monster is, to my eyes, not only the best work he ever did on film, but a piece that ranks really highly among all Film performances. Ever.

But replying to skull island's post made me realize for the first time that, had justice been served, Karloff would have been nominated against the first (and for almost 60 years the only) Oscar-winning horror performance. But, yes, Freddie is great, but Boris is transcendent.

I just seem to recall March winning the Oscar was in the 1932 Ceremony, a bit like Rick Baker recieving his 2011 Oscar for Wolfman, which was in theaters last year. I accept your proposal that the Mouliman movie was technically released in '31, and to clarify this is justified. Was Hannibal Lecter the next genre character to 'win' the Best Actor award? Yes, you're right, March would have received his award at the '32 ceremony. The award year would have been 1931-1932. And, yes again, Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster were the next genre winners for SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. I believe (off the top of my head) that the first genre nominee after Fredric March was Ellen Burstyn for THE EXORCIST. But don't hold me to that.

Mar 12 11 11:37 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	On the subject of Oscars of the early 30s period, 1933 saw a movie called CAVALCADE sweep the boards [no, I hadn't heard of it either. It turned up on TV one afternoon, but I switched off before too long, such was it's nondescript qualities]. KING KONG never recieved a nomination , let alone an OSCAR in any field for 1933. The '32 JEKYLL and HYDE is a fast-moving, fluid-camerawork offering with interesting makeup effects, but it's achievements certainly don't surpass the qualities of KONG, which even had brilliant music by MAX STEINER [the first proper score in a feature, apparantly] and excellent editing by Ted Cheeseman, on top of it's other obvious qualities. To be fair, though, I don't think the field of Special Effects had an existing category in 1933. Half of my personal fortune is on it's way to you, Rick....but you'll still be poor! Mar 12 11 10:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	CAVALCADE must have seemed awfully, awfully impawtant at the time, and it had a lovely, cultured pedigree, but these days folks who deal in Oscar-trivia generally consider it one of the two or three worst Best Picture winners ever. Personally, I think it's a stuffy but entertaining film. But MILES from any sort of Best anything.

Turner and Goldman's The Making of King Kong (which I'm sure you have) ends with a chapter entitled "Remember Cavalcade?" which echoes (or prefigures) your excellent point.
