In the 1960's and 1970's, perhaps inspired by the success of the Bantam Doc Savage and to a lesser degree perhaps those of the Shadow reprints, Warner Books reprinted the Avenger novels. I noticed that some of these paperbacks had cigarette advertisements in them. I wondered if a sort of "Joe Camel" backlash would have resulted. (Other paperback publishes such as Pinnacle also had cigarette advertisements in series such as the Butcher. However, Pinnacle series such as the Penetrator also had racial slurs-used in justified contexts-and profanity, so those did not have a crossover audience to younger viewers.)
Well, it turns out that Robert Lee of Alexandria, Virginia wrote in requesting that Warner Brooks desist in putting cigarette advertisements in the Avenger paperbacks.
Anyone know of other such incidents?
