Dec 30 05 6:32 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I remember that that at one time, i couldn't wait to see this film...it eluded me for ages untill the dvd release. The publicity picture of Carita on the chariot in Boadicea stance looked great. So this fim holds a special place for me,even if it did not live up to what i expected.I still find the film very enjoyable,apart from the fact that after quite a good chariot battle scene,the main charactor.....who the film was about in the first place..had a quick and i think badly handled death scene...cue the credits !!!! ...Anyone know what happened to Carita after the film ?? Cheers !

Dec 30 05 10:43 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think she was actually a hair stylist (born Carita Jarvinen in Finland). She certainly cuts a fine figure. The movie looks and feels like an Italian peplum. I could easily picture Brad Harris or Leonora Ruffo from The Queen of Sheba in the lead parts. I don't think it's a particularly bad picture, really; it's just so out of place with Hammer's output at the time that I wonder if fans just are unable to reconcile it with the more Horror-themed outings.

Jan 15 06 2:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Issue 17 of LITTLE SHOPPE OF HORRORS (with the NIGHT CREATURES cover) makes mention of VIKING QUEEN and its star in one of the articles. It's suggested that Daryl Zanuck took a "personal" interest in Carita.

Jan 15 06 4:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The IMDB mentions another Carita employed as a hairstylist on about a dozen mainly French films including The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. I have to wonder if they aren't perhaps the same lady.

Just when i thought i had found a later film,it turned out to be a different Carita.. (i think)...!!! It is such a shame that she has seems to have vanished from view,and when i see the publicity boards advertising her next to Ursula and Raquel as the next big thing...it just makes me wonder........what happened ??

Nov 29 09 4:22 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This film also escaped me for years until the dvd came out. At times I get the feeling of one of the "Carry on" films. I was a bit dissapointed in it, but glad I had eventually seen it. Though the ( for me ) interesting thing about the film is, it's when Patrick troughton got news he was the next Dr Who.

VIKING QUEEN was from 1967 so Hammer still had some good years and films left in them, including THE DEVIL RIDES OUT, QUATERMAS AND THE PIT, DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE and FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED. (Of course, things like SHATTER would also be part of that final decade. Not the most dynamic action/thriller of all time, was it?)

My grandad told me that as Ardmore in Ireland's animal trainer, he doubled her in the chariots, when she broke her leg. I even has his whip.

But it's no stranger than that woad that the soldiers wear in Braveheart, which also got a little it of criticism.

In William Klein's 1966 cult film, Who are you Polly Magoo, there are two sisters who are known as "les soeurs Carita" and apparently they did the hair (some of the styles quite outlandish) for the film and also appear in a scene with Grayson Hall--I recall two plump middle aged dowagers smiling and nodding as la Grayson, in her role of the imperious Miss Maxwell, barks orders at them in French. (great scene btw) I should get the movie out and have another look... I think the Viking Queen is great fun and very well done in its way. Great supporting cast (Andrew Keir, Niall MacGinnis, Pat Troughton, Adrienne Corri and winning some kind of award for most feral-eyed scenery-chewing of '67, Donald Houston as the Chief Druid). It's too bad that Don Murray was so lacklustre and wooden in the male lead. The chariot work is incredible and the locations are stunning and beautifully used. And the score is very unusual and has moments of great beauty. I don't get why this movie has the reputation that it has. I was just discussing "The Devil Rides Out" with another fan and I find that much less interesting in its way than "The Viking Queen." De gustibus non disputandem as the Romans used to say... H.

Carita Jarvinen, the Finnish model, was certainly gorgeous to look at but a wooden actress. Interestingly, the clips from this movie found most frequently online are the trailer and the whipping scene. There must be a lot of perverts out there. (I know, I'm one of them.)

I've often wondered if Hammer might have overestimated the appeal of this story to audiences in other countries who mostly had little or no idea who the "Viking Queen" was supposed to be. It would be interesting to compare their domestic grosses to their overseas sales.
