My only caveat with the film is its pat ending which lets the viewer out of the movie with a sense that justice has somehow been served, but to me feels like a cop out. Still it's a masterful film, which I can argue, almost all of Kubrick's are.

A dozen or so innocent men are murdered by the military in spite of the hero's (Kirk Douglas) attempts to save them. It doesn't feel like justice served at all. Ironically Kubrick wanted a "happy" ending but Douglas as producer refused to allow it.
