I came across an article from the Time Magazine issue of July 3, 1933, and will post excerpts because it is so bizarre.
"Governor Eugene Talmadge declared Martial law in Georgia last week over a dispute with Chairman John William Barnett of the State Highway Board"
"Governor Talmadge seized $2,500,000 of the Highway Department's money from local banks. This precaution forestalled Mr Barnett's incipient court action to tie-up the money so the Governor could not get at it."
"The money was held in a vault at the State Capital building guarded by a machine gun manned by husky militiamen."
"Governor Talmadge decided to complete his subjugation of the Highway Department. Militiamen armed with machine guns took over the Department's property and notified all anti-Talmadge men they were fired."
"'The time has not come for a Mussolini in Georgia,' cried Mr Barnett. 'Many people have told me that the Governor's action has indicated a deranged mind, and I rather think this is a charitable view of it.'"
*I post this as it is so bizarre and I view it as interesting history. I intend no political comment by it.
