It occurred to me that with all the talk about foods enjoyed on members' "Perfect Day For Monsterkids...", that it would be only natural to have a thread talking about what foods adoring mothers made for their Monster Kids.
My Mom could have learned her cooking skills from a native genius (my Granny), but she apparently picked up her chops elsewhere, coz she never made sour milk biscuits (God, I salivate thinking about them).
However, she was no slouch when it came to making the stuff that mid-century diets were made of.
Here are her biggest hits:
1) Spaghetti with Meat Sauce -- no, she didn't do meatballs (I had to go to the local seaside restaurant to get those), but the ground beef and tomato sauce based recipe she used was savory and fragrant and filled the air with its unique bouquet, letting you know that some spaghetti noodles were about to be dressed to kill.
2) Southern Fried Chicken -- this was labor-intensive, classic in its construction, and deep fried to perfection. The fried batter was irresistible and combined gloriously with the juicy chicken meat. I want a drumstick -- please.
3) Chicken and Dumplings -- Made with biscuit rounds, you would think the savoriness of this dish would be compromised, but the texture of the stewed lumps of dough was just perfect combined with the chicken juices (and thankfully, NO VEGGIES). Absolutely delicious and satisfying.
Those are the dishes that are most easily accessed and they take their place high in my memory because of their excellence.
If you guys will weigh in regarding foods your Moms (or Dads) made for you when you were kids, I might be able to unearth some more mouth-watering memories.
Seriously, I would love to hear about yours!
