I've already taken them but a buddy of mine is gonna do some custom backgrounds for those so stay tuned.......... those are gonna be REALLY fun!!

Jan 5 11 3:43 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Incredible work, FANMATION: this is the sort of piece I have dreamed about creating, but I doubt very much if I have anywhere near the ability required. Can you tell us a bit about how your KONG was constructed: did you use a lot of the same techniques as Marcel Delgado used in the early 30s: I think the KONG original had cotton and sponge rubber muscles built up, with liquid latex sculpted in in stages. There was a wooden skull with steel hinged jaws [going by the photos seen on this forum and elsewhere] : I don't think there was any casting of latex facial features done like is normally seen in modern articulated animation models.......did you do the face as a seperate latex casting, 'imprinted' from a clay original? These are just 'educated' guesses on my part, and I can see that the hands are fully-jointed ----were the finger digits done with minute chain-links, like in the original?.......Of course, you have made it clear that these KONG collectables are primarily for display purposes, and not for the rigors of an actual studio setup. I am convinced you will sell these pieces, there must surely be a market for quality of this caliber. 'the horror..............THE HORROR!' I guess I should take a little time to post some old work in progress pics of the process I used to make this puppet, this is REALLY condensed but it'll give you a better idea of how it was made. I was fortunate enough to be able to borrow one of the Sideshow/Bob Burns armatures from a buddy of mine which is where I got the dimensions to have the "working" armature made. Then I sculpted Kong directly over the armature Then I had to build up a separation wall around the sculpture for the molding process Then the mold was made

Quick question, How tall is the puppet? reason I ask is because my Kong puppets dimension's are taken directly from Bob's armature, and everyone always has said Kong was 18 inches tall, and well after the build up mine is closer to 19 & 1/2 inches tall Kess

Jan 5 11 8:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Remember, these are "work in progress" pics, I must have been working on the thumb digit when the pic was taken, I just kept it out for the pic. The 19 and a half inch height is correct when the armature is completely straightened out and he stands up straight (like a big boy), they just use the 18 inch height as an average height because that's how tall he is when he's in his natural, slightly hunched, stance.

Jan 5 11 10:44 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Shran, the lip wire is aluminum, and even though these will be functional as animation puppets I'm offering them as display pieces only simply due to the fact that animation puppets take a real beating from the extreme rigors of stop-motion...... the constant handling and posing of the puppets really takes it's toll on them after a while. So I'm not saying you can't animate with them, I'm just recommending that these be solely for display purposes only...... unless you have enough experience with stop-motion and are able to handle the inevitable repairs that will come with the rigors of stop-mo animation.

I appreciated all these pics, but my favorite is the one with the armature and skull in the plaster cast---intruiging, totally charming stuff! How did you apply fur afterwords: I understand that fur can be 'rubberized' these days [a development that wasn't available during the early 30s]. It must have taken many man-hours and experimentation to pull off this quality work, but the sheer satisfaction and recognition you have achieved must have been very satisfying indeed. I assume your KONG has cotton and rubber muscles between the armature and outer skin, going by the 'lagging' around his lower legs......great stuff, just like in the original.......and we can actually see this stuff clearly, as no pics have ever surfaced regarding the actual construction of the RKO models of '32: this sort of thing simply wasn't done back then! I am saving your pics to disc in my own KONG collection......they are on par with the Delgado versions! 'the horror..............THE HORROR!' Jan 6 11 3:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	You are spot-on about the endless repairs required for stop-motion puppets during actual working studio conditions, Fantamation; there were many times when Delgado was required to work well into the night to adjust loosened armature bolts, etc: obviously, the seams would have to be torn open to get to the metal skeleton. Even the heat of the RKO animation lights proved problematic: a wooden 'stand-in' of KONG and possibly some of his animated co-stars were utilized for this purpose.......of course, you dudes know all this stuff already! How do you manage to center the armature dead center in the mold and stop it from 'shifting' off-center during the heat of the baking process? This is just one of the many questions that have occured to me regarding this animated model process! 'the horror..............THE HORROR!' So glad to see you on here although I'm sure you've been on here for a quite a while, Hope you had a great holiday bud! skull island escapee: all the details and musculature were sculpted, I didn't use any build-up methods. The armature is secured to a base which in turn is secured to the bottom of the mold which keeps the armature from shifting, also I'm not using foam latex for these puppets, instead I'm using silicone because of its longevity so these puppets won't degrade over time.
