Dec 7 10 12:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm starting to get the ball rolling on buying a unit as I don't want to wait until my current DVD player fails. I'm looking for one that plays both blu and standard DVD and is either multi-region or easily hackable. I want something affordable that also upconverts standard DVD's if possible. I have ZERO knowledge of blu-ray (I own one disc and have yet to even see what one looks like onscreen), or it's cost... so any help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, EDIT: As no one's recommended anything so far, I may have to pick up a cheap standard DVD player that's easily hackable. I think my philips dvp 642 is on its last legs. Pretty tough to find another of those. So if anyone can recommend a CURRENT standard DVD player with a region hack OR the aforementioned blu-ray multiregion player, I'd be REALLY grateful. But I've noticed that dvdbeaver considers highly a particular multi-region Blu-Ray player sold at amazon, the Sherwood BDP-5004 - http://www.amazon.com/dp/...ative=373489&camp=211189 Hope this may be of some help in your search.

The Canadian Amazon is fairly useless in comparison, being either out of stock or unreasonably expensive. I'll see if they have this one. I probably shouldn't invest in a new player until I have a set that can show it off, and thus why bother buying Blu-Ray discs? Sorry I can't be of any help, but I'll be watching the responses, maybe I'll be tempted to buy, too.

Wal Mart has the Sony BDP-s270 (which as far as I know has little of what Mac is looking for) under $100. I'm thinking it might be a good starter blue ray. They also have the LG BD550 for around the same price. "The world's going to change tonight, doctor, I'm glad you'll be able to watch it. And... happy Halloween."

I have a LOT of R2 titles. I don't mind spending more for a unit that will play them. We cancelled our TV service, so this player is our entertainment. Maybe I'll just have to buy another standard DVD player for now. Multi-region is KEY. I have too many discs from Europe to buy anything that won't support them. No idea what features are important and what aren't, or what will work with my 5 year old Sony LCD and my much older receiver. I may have to just get another good hackable DVD player for now and hold off on bluray until I can find someone who can give me better advice. Nobody really caters to multiregion here in town, which I find strange... but that's Ottawa, where anything out of the ordinary is out of the question. Dec 21 10 9:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I don't know about Blu-Ray, but VCT Electronics sells, on Amazon, a number of different model standard and Hi-Def Philips region-free, out of the box, DVD players. Search: Philips Region Free DVD player The players ship from VCT, not Amazon. So the main drawback is they charge a lot for postage. ($16.00 per shipment in the U.S.) They do ship to Canada, but again high shipping: $24.00 per order plus $2.99 per pound for 5-10 day delivery, and $40.00 per order for faster shipping. I have bought two plain Standard Def Region Free Philips DVD players from VCT and they shipped quick and they were Region Free out of the box. I think my second player was actually a European Philips model as it came with a North American adapter plug attached.

I have a Philips DVP 562(?) and would definitely go with a Phillips again. I could probably find one of those in town and avoid shipping. I'd still rather get the blu-ray if possible, because I know I'll want one down the road. I don't mind paying up to, say $350 for something that will play all regions of blus and standards and give me 5.1 surround as I have now. I could care less about streaming, netflix, etc. No use for it. I guess I'm really looking for someone to say... I have this unit and it works well with my North American TV/system, plays all regions and costs about this much... then I can determine if it will work with my equipment, and if so, buy it. I'll look at those Philips standards and see if I can find one around here, in case my bluray plans fall through. gfanikf... I've sent you a pm... Jan 1 11 11:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Mac go to http://www.videohelp.com/ Look under DVD hacks and just input the player model number to see if it is hackable. Philips are generally all able to be made region free through codes entered on the remotes. Good luck.
