Though the actor playing Karnstein was a terrible ham, almost as bad as the vampire lord in Vampire Circus. I do wonder why AIP or someone like that didn't pick it up and give it a wider US distribution as I think it's the best of Hammer's 70's movies.

In a letter to James Carreras regarding the disappointing returns on THE VAMPIRE LOVERS, Jim Nicholson suggested (among other things) that there was a glut of vampire movies in the market. AIP may have still felt that way when TWINS OF EVIL was looking for a U.S. distributor.

Jun 26 10 2:38 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	In my old South Philadelphia neighborhood, TWINS OF EVIL played on a double bill with HANDS OF THE RIPPER at the long defunct President Theatre, just a few blocks from my former home. Since both pictures were rated R, I wasn't allowed to see them, even though the theatre did not usually enforce the ratings. Just a year or two later, the President became a porno house, runiing X-rated fare from 7:00 AM until 4:00 AM the next day, every day of the year, while being located right next to a junior high school and only one block or so away from a large Catholic church, in a conservative working class neighborhood! When the porno stopped attracting a crowd, around 1976 or '77, all the movie equipment was ripped out, the building was renovated, and became the President Banquet Room and Catering Hall. My tenth high school reunion was held there, and I made sure not to attend! Today, the building is a Muslim mosque, of all things. I realize that most of this post dosen't have all that much to do with TWINS OF EVIL, but I'm in a bit of a chatty mood today!

That's where I saw DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, LIVE AND LET DIE, WESTWORLD, and at least one of the Pink Panther movies, along with some other titles. I saw D.C. CAB there one miserable Christmas Eve, and I THINK I saw Dan Ackroyd's 1987 DRAGNET spoof there. The Duke and Duchess are, of course, gone now... along with my youth! **Sigh**

It was to be titled, Vampire Virgins. I think he was supposed to play a Villager. I wonder how Peter Cushing would do if he ever played Count Karnstein? Cheers, Baron Michael

Sep 27 10 1:09 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The title Twins Of Evil took the place of Village of the Vampires (The Vampire Virgins) Cushing was to play the role of Giles Barton in Lust For a Vampire, a role written for him by Tudor Gates. His wife was taken ill and Peter withdrew from the role. The part was played by Ralph Bates.

Somewhere, maybe on a Cushing website, there was a look at this and other unrealized Hammer projects. If I recall, the original treatment for VAMPIRE VIRGINS differed in plot from the final screenplay for TWINS OF EVIL. If I'm remembering the online article correctly, and if their information was correct, early on the idea was to have Cushing appear as Count Karnstein. (Ted Newsom might know more.) I know Cushing shot a day's worth of footage as Valerie Leon's father in BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB before dropping out of the production because of his wife. (Stills from that first day's shoot are an Easter Egg on the Anchor Bay DVD.) Does anyone know if the actual footage survives?

Wayne Kinsey's book 'Hammer Films-The Elstree Studio Years' mentions a plot that involves two bounty hunters,hired to rid Castle Karnstein of vampires. When the villagers refuse to pay the pair any money, they kidnap the daughters of the village elders and take them to the castle. The bounty hunters are unaware that Count Karnstein still lives,and he turns the daughters into vampires and sends them back to the village for revenge. It mentions that Peter Cushing was pencilled in to play Count Karnstien.

Dec 22 10 3:37 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	We just watched it again. Claire hadn't seen it before, It was on TV a few week so we thought we'd give it a go. We agreed it looks like they spent a bit of money on the castle set but it's not a good film & hardly the sex fest I'd remembered. It was fun in a shabby way, but there's little to recommend it. The female leads are attractive, It's good to see Kathleen Byron in a film but PC had little to do and Karnstein has stepped straight out of a pantomime. Shame, I'd always remembered it as being rather good. Russ
