Now... considering the prologue of 72 AD takes place in Hyde Park (accordng to the narration)... and the Victorian version of Johnny Alucard buried the ashes in the cemetary thereabouts (?) ... and the Smoke of Dracula rises from the same place the ashes were buried a hundred years ago to the day... that must place this new D.D. Denham highrise in the middle of Hyde Park. Fancy a scene in Speaker's Corner, some loony going on about Denham being the greatest evildoer in the world, The End is Nigh... hey, wait a minute... he's got something there...

Oct 14 06 9:08 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It's all very brief and vague, but at some point Van Helsing states that he destroyed Dracula once, "three years ago", but these creatures can live again..."through reincarnation". Something about a disciple is mentioned, and Inspector Murray suggests "the Chinese woman, Chin Yang". The implication seems to be that she performed a Black Mass and whistled up the Count a la her swingin' predecessor Johnny Alucard. .'. Earl Roesel .'.

Jan 30 07 10:29 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My copy is the badly retitled "Rites of Dracula", and it looks like a tv edit, because there is cuts that seem to cut out was was probably nudity in the original film (the sacrifice scene). Though, if no nudity from those scenes exist in any format, I wonder if the way they are edited led to fan speculation about cut nudity and gore for releases in other regions of the world.

Jan 31 07 11:02 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm always amazed at how many companies offer this under its various titles (RITES OF DRACULA, SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA, COUNT DRACULA AND HIS VAMPIRE BRIDE), either on its own or as part of a PD package. I've seen several versions, all with the nudity intact. Didn't realize there was a home video release that had trimmed the material out.

Sep 27 09 7:00 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I watched this for the first time the other night and enjoyed it a lot. Wasn't expecting much from this late entry, but it pulled me in pretty much throughout. Peter Cushing was such a great actor and seeing him as Van Helsing once more was a treat. I'd seen the previous DRACULA A.D. 1972 at a drive-in when it first came out, but haven't since. I really liked the opening credits and music with the Dracula image slowly growing over them. Very cool!

Sep 28 09 4:12 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This is the one Hammer Dracula that steadfastly refuses to appear on DVD anywhere except the USA, but there it is all "Public Domain" copies which are mostly horrid quality copies, even pan and scanned, and where the original title is replaced by something inspiring like "Dracula and His Dracula Brides". The Anchor Bay release is much sought after and goes for high prices - both the first release and the re-release, where it came out of part of Anchor Bay's "double features" and is paired with Dracula, Prince of Darkness. Even the Anchor Bay really shows it's age: OAR, but not anamorphic, and the quality is certainly not up to the standards you'd expect of anything relased now. When the film is shown here in the UK on TV, it is invariably cut, the most significant of these being the scene in the cellar where the secretary-turned-vamp gets staked between the boobs. Most US DVD editions are uncut, and the AB one certainly is.

Channel Four used to show a widescreen version of the film, which featured the money shot from Valerie Van Ost's staking (cut from the UK video release). I don't know if Warner Brothers still hold the UK rights to the film.

Sep 28 09 12:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I saw this for the first time at the '75 Famous Monsters con in NYC. After the screening a bunch of fans were hanging with producer Michael Carreras. Someone asked, "How was Dracula reivived? Was there a scene missing?" Carreras said that he was sure that there was a scene where Dracula was revived with a ritual and blood or somthing. I chimed in and said that the count just pops up and appears, none the worse for wear. Carreras said, "I'll have to look into that." Nevertheless, I remember liking it the first time, thinking it was better than A.D. '72. My expectations were high because it was a few years old and still unreleased in the U.S. I caught it a little later theatrically as VAMPIRE BRIDE. Since then, A.D. seems to be the more entertaining film for me, probably for all the wrong reasons.

(A Halloween showing while I was a senior in high school in October of '78.) A year or two later, TO THE DEVIL A DAUGHTER finally played in the area on a double bill with DAWN OF THE DEAD. A few years earlier, one area drive-in had a Halloween night line-up of VAMPIRE LOVERS, LUST FOR A VAMPIRE and THE VELVET VAMPIRE. (Don't know why they didn't keep the Karnstein theme and throw on TWINS OF EVIL instead of V.V.)
