John and I were good friends in the mid-1980s. I didn't see him much after his novel Vampire$ was made into John Carpenter's VAMPIRES, but I do remember he was not happy with it.
I've had quite a few friends who've had novels published, but Steakley's Armor was the best I ever read. However, I seem to recall that it was criticized at the time for borrowing heavily from another book (perhaps Starship Troopers, which I never read).
I quite liked him.
