Watched a "killer"(ha,ha) 1962 episode The Case of the Ancient Romeo.Jeff Morrow, Rex Reason,Harry Von Zell(just finished watching an episode of Burns and Allen spooky), Antoinette Bower, K.T. Stevens, and, Robert Cornthwaite. It don't get much better than this folks!

Really enjoying these 'remakes' of some of the 30s films. Last night I caught "The Case of the Howling Dog", very different approach between Raymond Burr and Warren William in this story. Mason wearing the interesting looking suits still in the second season.

Wait till you get to "The Case of the Velvet Claws". That's an improvement on the thirties film AND the Gardner novel. (And Patricia Barry gives a doozy of a performance.)

If my memory is correct, many of the later Perry Mason episodes are remakes of earlier episodes. For some reason this annoyed me as a kid and therefore I didn't bother to watch a lot of the shows from the last few seasons. I shall not make that mistake twice, however.

Watching Me-TV's presentation of this show a lot lately, from 1959 and 1966, two opposite ends, I noticed that no matter what era, Paul Drake (William Hopper) smoked like a chimney. Perry only smoked in the earlier episodes, he seems to have stopped doing that at some point. Even then, he didn't smoke a ton. Della never seems to have taken a drag?

And I noted in another thread the musical cues in the first 3-4 seasons of this show. Really good! Some of them seem unique to PM, while others I know I've heard before, in other 50's shows.

Pretty sure Raymond Burr had cancer surgery during one of the seasons. The season where Mason only made token appearances in a bunch of episodes & they had guest stars taking his place like Michael Rennie & Bette Davis.

Yes, that's right. He had some problem and was out about 4 episodes, not sure which season, maybe 5? I think he also had his arm in a sling for a few episodes prior to and after that. Was it cancer or something else?

I was wrong about the cancer. It was some kind of "corrective" surgery.

The reason for Burr's absence for four episodes is that he was recovering from a heart attack. His condition was at one point serious enough that the producers mooted replacing him with Mike Connors.

One of the things that really makes this show special and sticks with me even beyond the mystery and courtroom drama aspects, which on their own are excellent, is the camaraderie that is apparent between the cast, particularly between Raymond Burr, Barbara Hale and William Hopper, though all 5 of the main cast really have a great chemistry together (adding in Tragg and Burger). I love the little closing scene, which usually has the 3 of them in Perry's office or a late night restaurant just having some feel good time together, along with an explanation of how Perry figured things out. Last night, for example, Hopper just cracked up over something Perry said, and it was fun to see how they really seem to enjoy one another's company. The other day, Della asked if they could actually get out of the office before midnight and as the bells chimed midnight, they raced out, though Della had to come back in and close the windows, and Perry rushed back to grab something before they got out of there as the bells were still chiming.

Just love those little moments.

Though I think the first few seasons of this series are the best, I'm enjoying watching the final season. Paul Drake has a lot to do, which is fun to watch. Raymond Burr is way overweight, which is fine with me also. This one I'm watching today features "Stonn" from "Amok Time" on STAR TREK.
