This is a beautiful thing. Seeing Elsa and Una here in their prologue roles makes me sorta wish that the Byron and Shelley actors had been cast from those who played other roles later in the story. Maybe John Carradine as Byron, and Dwight Frye could play Shelley (just have Jack Pierce get out the pomade and juvenile makeup) .

It looks like the portrait of Lord Byron is 729-144, but it seems out of place in that group. The logical spot would be in the 150 series, but the last digit on the Lord Byron still is definitely a 4 and I already have a clearly marked 729-154.

There was a discussion about this about 3 years ago, complete with comparison photographs and Photoshop overlays, and the general consensus was that, yes, Valerie Hobson DID play the woman in the coffin. That's not proof, of course.

Anthony, you sure did a tereffic job on this Image Gallery.

It takes a lot of work and a lot of time and patience to do this type of thing, I can attest to it. And thank you for the large number of additions and/or the still numbers for my "unknowns". I was very pleasantly suprised
you had so many of them.

I messed up and had 729-83 down as 729-68 - that's what happens when you get two hours sleep at night tracking all these stills down, some don't have numbers etc. trying to double check everything.

I have 729-21 and you have it as 729-31; here is a blow up from my jpeg

I'm reading this is as "729-21"

Here is something that is confusing to me

They both have the Monster in the same scene with the corpse, but they are different photos -- for example, the Monster's head is tilted differently. But the first one is 729-52 and the second one is
729-59. If it's the same scene, why are they so far spaced apart number wise??

I have still 729-89 and you have it as 729-84. The last digit is on top of a piece of lab equipment , obscuring it a bit.Hopefully another still will surface with one of those numbers and then by process of elimination
we'll have the number. It doesn't matter to me if I'm wrong.

I have 729-P67 and you have it as 729-P57. The resolution is small and it's tough to make it out. It doesn't matter to me if 'm wrong.

I have 729-P61 and you have it as 729-P51. again we have a small resolution scan. It deosn't matter to me if I'n wrong.

The numbers are also not typed, they were hand written, which doesn't help.

I would like to commend you once again for your hard work.

When handwritten, a "9" and a "4" can be easily mingled. It could be the same thing for Karloff with the corpse, we read "729.59" but it could be 729-54, not far away from the other almost identical 729-52. Just a supposition, of course. And concerning the still already identified as "729.54" - a portrait of Dwight Frye - it could be the "real" 729.59, but considering it follows a portrait of "the other ghoul", 729.54 seems logical. A real headache...

I agree with you that the still I had as 729-89 is actually 729-84.

I found the "real" 729-89 and posted it on the other thread, along with 729-75.

You're absolutely right, Bob. And the still makes much more sense in that number series. I'm revising the thread accordingly. Thanks. And you're also right about the work it takes to identify these properly. You wouldn't believe how many times my wife has walked by and said "Are you looking at those monster pictures AGAIN?!?"

I agree. 729-59 is puzzling to me. As Jean-Claude points out, the hand written 4s and 9s can easily be mixed up, but the portrait of Karl at 729-54 is unmistakeably a 4, eliminating that possibility. The most logical number would be 729-51. Maybe the traces near the top of the number that make it look like a 9 are just a deception in the low resolution scan. Hopefully a better quality picture turns up.

That one's another tough read. The P-stills of the Bride seem to span the range of 57 to 67 so it could be either. Another case of hoping to find a more conclusive scan.

The original numbering seems occasionally arbitrary. A series of related shots will be sequential, with a jump to some other subject or location, then back to the first sequence. This could have happened after the stills were shot, if the photographer(s) did not catalog and number the shots each day as they progressed through shooting, but, say, at the end of the week, not bothering to sort everything properly before choosing the stills for the PR department and then adding sequential catalog numbers.
