Usually seen as one of the weaker Hammers, I've personally always seen it as one of the best. After rediscovering it on DVD recently, I remembered that
this really is a great little film.
The acting is simply superb. Michael Gough is wonderfully wicked as the slimy Lord Ambrose D'Arcy. Heather Sears is cute as Christine, and Herbert Lom comes of as being the screen's most sympathetic, rather than evil, Phantom.
I find that the Harry character played by Edward deSouza was an intresting hero, and I loved the added subplot of Harry trying to solve the mystery of Proffessor Petrie. I also believe that this Hammer version features the best looking "Phantom's Lair" set of the main three (1925, 1943, and 1961.) Even the Phantom's overall look strikes me as being the creepiest out of the three, with it's moth eaten cloak, and stitched together, one-eyed mask.
I feel the reason this film gets such a bad rap, is simply because of it's extreme differences from Leroux's novel. Aside from the concept of a disfigured man haunting a theatre, and teaching a girl called Christine how to improve her singing, it tells almost a completely different story. Although different, I still love the film for what it is on it's own.
Even though a bit rushed, the ending always has me in tears.
It is also quite a lighthearted film when compared to other more darker classics such as HORROR OF DRACULA and CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN.
Aside from a few akward Opera scenes (akward because of songs in English) POTO also features one of Hammers most beautifully moving musical scores.
Even though not in the same league as CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF, what do you other Monster Kids think of this terribly underrated classic?
