BTW not so sure that "maturity" has much to do with it (I do believe you were using that word a bit facetiously), since I'm no prime candidate for the latter. It's just that my native reaction whene I first saw CURSE at @12 years old (so many moons ago) was that I was deeply moved by the way the narrative evolves through the main character's childhood; probably the first horror film to depict an innocent child demi-monster & the small community of sympathetic adults that tries to care for him. It generates a certain human warmth that most of us might relate to, & so gives the climactic late transformation, when all that caring & prudence run tragically aground, so much oomph. Helps that the whole transformation sequence, including the short cutaway scenes sandwiched into it (Don Alfredo searching for the silver bullet, Cristina being told the truth of Leon's affliction as she reposes by the fireplace), is so beautifully shot & paced that the momentum is just irresistible. I think it has Terence Fisher's mark all over it & is absolutely some of his best work. Still potent after all these years, bravo Terry.

It's funny how one (meaning myself) can have a sort of feeling of a movie's workings but never really put it into words, or even thoughts that can be grasped. But the way you put it is pretty much the way I've always felt it somehow. So thanks for explaining myself to myself. I have some problems with CURSE. It's a little too languid for my taste, but I admire the way it treads a different path, and I love the makeup and the way Ollie shines through the fur.

Mar 26 12 12:47 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	When I first saw "Curse of the Werewolf" at a Dusk-to-Dawn Drive-In showing I confess it bitterly disappointed me. Okay, I was about 10 or so and wanted to see my monster, especially after seeing those super-cool ollie in makeup stills in "FM". Today, though, I love it and consider it my favorite Hammer. I really enjoy how we follow Leon's tragic life story. My only complaint is that too many werewolf murders happen in too short a time after Leon's visit to the pub. Dare I say "overkill"? Is anyone on the Board familiar with the Edward Levy's novel "The Beast Within"? Not the movie adapted from the book, but the book itself. I'm sure he took a cue from "Curse".

Mar 26 12 4:55 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was around 17 when I first saw CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF and really liked the movie but like many wished it has more werewolf action. Had hoped for a sequel (which probably would have had more werewolf action) but alas that was not to be. Too bad the new Hammer seems to want to make new Frankenstein and Dracula films but not a werewolf one. LEGEND was OK but had about the same amount of werewolf scenes and not done as well.

I agree with the beauty, vivid, and sharp from this particular grab. So why make everyone backtrack to see it again? Here ya go folks, enjoy. I especially dig on the painted(?) clouds in the background of the cell window.. "You can't smell any reefer, can you"?

It's a pretty good package, Rick, if you can get it for the right price (it's a little too expensive for a non blu-ray at the moment, I think...) The picture quality on the film is good without being outstanding - it's uncut and anamorphic, but a little darker than the R1 disc from Universal. The 45-minute documentary on disc two is a nice extra, including interviews with Yvonne Romain, Catherine Feller, sculptor Mike Hill etc - but it could (and should) have been included on the first disc. Apparently, Final Cut simply re-used their earlier standalone release as disc 1, and didn't want to go to the hassle of re-authoring it - hence the 'extra' disc for the special edition. Their vanilla disc of Kiss Of The Vampire is well worth buying if you're a fan of the film - despite the lack of extras, the remastered print is simply gorgeous, and should really have been put on a blu-ray. Picture quality is noticeably better than the R1 'Hammer Horror Series' Universal version.

It's a testament to Endore's book that even an adaption that really took huge liberties and essentially retained only the most basic elements from the novel - that Curse of the Werewolf , to date, still has one of the best stories for a werewolf film, in my opinion. Puts Sidomak's Wolf Man screenplay to shame, though I recognize that Sidomak's Wolf Man is the more important film.

Oct 5 12 7:59 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	casper, I sure like your comments, yes, besides Larry Talbot, Reed's Leon is very sad and the adults caring for and loving him also touches you, and his mother's rape and death too. Reed's pretty fearsome as the werewolf, all in a pretty good flick, shame Reed left us at a young age, he kind of reminds me of Glen Corbett.

Here's a publicity photo from CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF with Yvonne Romain and Oliver Reed that's new to me... .... ..and while she played his mother in CURSE, in CAPTAIN CLEGG (US title NIGHT CREATURES) they did appear together....
