Aug 10 06 10:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Jay here This film from Hammer is, for me, one of the best, although set in "Spain" all the actors have British accents, but features all the regs; Micheal Ripper, Clifford Evans, Katerine Feller; Reed's make-up was very original and the storyline pretty good. Richard Wadsworth as the beggar,and did I mention Yvonne Romaine are in the cast, a must for Hammer fans. thanks,JM

Aug 11 06 11:08 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I love this film, too, Jay. It's my favorite werewolf film and one of my favorite Hammers. I think Clifford Evans is great as wise old Don Caredo, and the monster makeup is innovative and startlling for the time the film was made. Some people complain about British actors playing Spaniards, but that doesn't bother me. I'm glad they didn't do cod Spanish accents. I think the monster's face was supposed to be saved as a surprise by Terence Fisher, but the advertising blew that. Not only did all the posters show Oliver Reed in makeup, but FAMOUS MONSTERS featured a stellar cover painting of him by Basil Gogos.

Aug 11 06 11:20 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The part where Oliver Reed is seen turning into a werewolf and breaking out of jail is one of the most intense werewolf scenes ever. He was perfect for the role. I only wish more could've been done with the finale than just showing glimpses of him running around the rooftops. Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.

Clifford Evans was very noteworthy as the "Van Helsing" like character in "Kiss of the Vampire." Another Hammer goodie for us fans. thanks,JM

Aug 31 06 6:01 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Took most of the audience halfway through the movie to realize that it's suppose to take place in Spain. It smells of Britain throughout the film. Good film, good script and good choice in picking the lead (Reed looks weird out of makeup, saved Hammer makeup a few pennies).

Spartacus, for example, was largely shot in Death Valley. It doesn't look anything like southern Italy, but it worked for the film. The Spanish sets for CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF are well made and convincing, and the acting is good. Would it somehow have been better if the cast had put on cod Spanish accents, or if they'd filmed it in Spanish and shown it with English subtitles?

Sep 3 06 5:33 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I agree with the general point about movies being shot in California that are set in foreign locations, but I wanted to offer some additional clarification on the filming of "Spartacus": "Spartacus" was not largely shot in Death Valley. The Death Valley sequences in "Spartacus" were only the opening scenes that were supposed to be set in Libya, where Ustinov was on a gladiator buying junket and 'bought' Kirk Douglas. Death Valley was not used for any of the filmed sequences set in Rome. FYI: These are the only scenes directed by Anthony Mann that remained in the final cut. The Rome scenes, interiors and exteriors, were nearly all filmed at Universal Studios. the Hollywood ranch in Thousand Oaks and the beach at Oxnard. Crassus' (Laurence Olivier) estate where he meets Tony Curtis was filmed at William Randolph Hearst's San Simeon estate. The extensive battle scenes in "Spartacus" were filmed over in Spain by Stanley Kubrick using upwards of 5000 Spanish Army soldiers as extras.
