As is, there are two exceedingly mediocre films that neither one actually delivers on certain key elements. Skyline was missing the likable characters, and Independence Day was missing the aliens. How a film can be about an alien invasion, and actually show nothing of the aliens (except for two, maybe three, very "blah" scenes) is unforgiveable. Pitting the two against each other, I will take WAR OF THE WORLDS (both the original and the Speilberg) and possibly BATTLE: LOS ANGELES any day of the week.

I actually started watching it about a month ago and dropped out very early on (just as the real story was starting) out of disinterest in the human characters. Let's face it does anyone really like Eric Balfour in anything? But I gave it another shot and found it to be a worthy time killer with decent albeit not especially original (design wise) CGI FX. True there isn't much of a story arc for the humans, but at the same time by focusing on such a narrow perspective of the events we are allowed to connect the dots in our own imagination as to what is going on elsewhere, thus avoiding a lot of the usual alien invasion film cliches (though certainly not all of them). I can understand why so many people reacted negatively to the down beat and ultimately just really weird ending, but to me it seemed much more SF inspired than the usual bombastic climax found in films like this. Is this a sort of Galactic evolutionary process and if so who is really doing the evolving? That kind of open ended weirdness may not follow the dictates of plot closure typical in Hollywood these days, and is understandably annoying for folks who prefer to have things clearly spelled out and wrapped up as the credits roll. I can't even imagine how a sequel would continue this story since the human element would seem to be beside the point but I suppose there would be enclaves with survivors that might find an ally with the new red brained tribe of aliens. Not a great film by any means but certainly worth a look for fans of the genre.
