Apart from a Dartmoor establishing shot, the location is Frensham Ponds, just outside Guildford in Surrey. I have been there many times, and you have to walk up the sandy paths to the top of the hill and you can look down on the ponds (seen in the film). The Reptile and Frankenstein Created Women were also filmed there and not that much has changed really since. Lots of heather and sandy trails.

What was the deal with the actress playing Miss Stapleton. She's not bad looking but she's no Yvonne Monlaur or Yvonne Romain. Was she some ones girlfriend and was the nationality of the character changed to accomadate her accent? Why not just get another actress and stick a bit closer to the book? Russ

Dr Shock Fan wrote: Interesting read here.. Hound is my favorite Hammer.. which is saying a lot since I am not a Hammer fan in general. Although as some of you point out it strays from the original story in somewhat Hammer fashion, they still bring this Holmesian horror to the big screen in a haunting way. The discussion about the Hell Hound brings to mind one of my Favorite Hell Hounds.. had he made an appearance in this Hammer Horror it might have lifted it to a new level. I'm talking about the "Beast" from Brotherhood of the Wolf. Now that's a beast! If only Hammer had the budget to make a Hell Hound like that.

I wasn't aware that Hammer actors were particularly maligned. I've heard one or two digs about them over the years (most notably by William K. Everson who once opined that as a lot they weren't up Laurence Oliver-Clive Brook standards of excellence) but "much-maligned" seems a bit excessive. That said, I'm not really a huge fan of Hammer actors with very notable exceptions (Peter Cushing, Hazel Court, Richard Wordsworth to name a few.) I don't want to stir up any controversies but, on a whole they strike me as very seasoned and accomplished lot of stage actors who often back on technique rather than put their all into it. Detached is the word. At the time they were being made, appearing in a Hammer movie wasn't exactly a prestige gig and a lot of them didn't seem to be trying very hard. By the way, I am a real Anglophile when it comes to actors so give me Claude Rains, Charles Laughton and James Mason in place of Noel Willman, Clifford Evans and Andrew Keir. Please! My opinion, of course.
