It would appear that HOUND did reasonably well at the box office, certainly well enough to be deemed successful by Hammer standards, although I'm unable to nail down any numbers. While most sources, including Hinds and Hyman, indicate there was never any thought given to doing another Holmes film at any time, this is usually followed by comments about high fee demands from the Doyle estate making the notion a moot point anyway. Mar 28 08 5:28 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Has anyone mentioned anywhere that the laser disc release of HOUND has an isolated music and effects track. It isn't a long score by James Bernard's standards, but still very very good. As so many of the pre-Philip Martell music tracks do not exist, this is a nice way to get to hear most of the classic Hammer music score. Also the laser release of VAMPIRE CIRCUS has an isolated track. Lots more "clunks" and "ughs" of sound effects, but has the whole David Whittaker music score - one of the best latter day Hammer scores.

Jun 15 08 7:43 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just re-watched HOUND for the first time in 20 years. It's pretty good, but I'm glad I didn't show it to my niece and nephew. The opening scene with the evil count knifing the woman to death is a little intense for the little ones. I presume that this is the only version of HOUND that includes (do we need spoilers on something this old?) that makes a female character from the book into a villainess? Wonder why Hammer wanted Marla Landi to be a bad girl? Any thoughts? Only thing I didn't like was Hammer's version of the Hound. Very disappointing.

True, the Rathbone one wasnt bad. The only one that impressed me was the doggy in the Richard Roxburgh version of a few years back. I didnt think much of the film and the Hound was a wee bit too CGI but it was certainly unpleasant. Really mangy looking.

Wonder why Hammer wanted Marla Landi to be a bad girl? Any thoughts? Well, Hammer had to turn the Conan Doyle novel into a Hammer movie, didn't they? An evil sexy fatal woman would certainly be one step in that direction. I also found the character's passionately expressed class resentment to be quite interesting. It's a skinny, light coloured dog with an inmobile mask, shot in long and unflattering takes. Pathetic really

I still say that no matter what you do the hound willl be something of a letdown. After all, it's still just a dog - a big, ugly one but a dog all the same. Jun 22 08 5:01 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Actually, this is a problem inherent in the combination of the detective story with horror/fantasy. There may be a crossover in the readership but the expectations are vastly different. For the most part, the readers of detective stories expect that the solution of the mystery should play fair and deliver an explanation grounded in what is physically possible. Introducing elements of the supernatural are ideal for the building of atmosphere and hoodwinking the reader, but the thing is they have to be shown to be red herrings by the end - so some of the 'magic' is lost. If anyone has ever read anything by John Dickson Carr they'll know what I mean. In books like The Three Coffins and He Who Whispers there are lots of spooky goings-on and allusions to vampires committing the crimes. However, the resolutions, while tricky and pushing believability, are based on real world events and phenomena. This agency stands flat-footed upon the ground, and there it must remain. The world is big enough for us. No ghosts need apply." That being said, there's no reason that, as Livius put it, this kind of attack by this kind of beast couldn't be scary as hell on film; witness the climax of THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL, for one. Jun 22 08 8:50 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Ditto on the dichotomy of the spectral hound vs the real one. Less so in the novel, but still. In my mind, the legendary hound would be the size of a sabre-tooth tiger, or better yet, the dog demon statues that come to life in Ghostbusters. Keeping the thing offscreen in the Hammer prologue, and the high angle down on the nasty nobleman (implying the thing is about twelve feet high at the drooling snout) emphasizes the bigger-than-possible inference. And in the end, it's a damned dog. Re Hammer: boy, for what little dough they had, that's such a neat movie! Interesting that there's not one exterior shot of London (Clip clip goes the novel's scene in which Holmes and Watson, riding in a cab, see the mysterious bearded gent walking down the street.)
