Once he's Risen, I don't see or feel that same vicious animalistic aura he once exuded. Almost a bit of a parody. It's a shame Hammer left that window open too long. A missed opportunity to catch Lee in his sinister prime.. I'm not sure we can blame Hammer for having such a gap between Christopher Lee's Dracula debut and his return to the role; I seem to recall reading that the studio wanted to bring him back early on but Lee either wasn't interested or wasn't available. (I'm sure we've got a better-informed Hammer historian lurking around these parts that could confirm or debunk that.)

That reminds me of the now "controversial" first staking scene in Horror Of Dracula. I always wondered how Drac got out of his sarcophagus and out of the building so silently and quickly without Harker noticing. In fact, I don't know why he would even leave the room????? Well, movie wise, I think I do; I guess they wanted the double shock of not finding him in the sarcophagus and his entrance into the room. I hear what your saying, but you first see his shadow as he is coming down the steps from the outside door then they show him on the landing. Why he had to go outside is beyond me. I always thought (IMHO) that they could have gotten just as big a scare if Harker backed suddenly into Drac when he was moving away from Dracs freshly staked bride. By the way, I heard about that missing footage. WB cut it because Hammer set it to an altered version of Tiny Tim's Tip Toe Through the Tulips.

Let's see we have the following missing scenes: HORROR Valerie Guant turning old after being staked (actually just found -see other thread) Dracula leaving the vault - doing dirty work - then returning to frighten Harker The vomiting scene by Arthur after Lucy's staking Dracula secreting away his coffin from that funny undertaker Dracula sneaking into the Holmwood house and setting up shop downstairs Dracula stopping at the Transylvanian General Store to purchase a shovel Dracula looking all burned up during the final staking scene (oops that has been found and we all are wanting to see that!) PRINCE Klove collecting Drac's ashes. the footage of the transformation of the original Castle Dracula to the one we get in Prince of Darkness Shot of Christopher Lee as Dracula - no clothes on except a black speedo right after being brought back to life Sexy footage of Barbara Shelley as a recently turned vampire - wait. I think we actually see that. RISEN Dracula sneaking that coffin into the Pub/Bakery basement. Dracula bouncing nearly a mile away from the castle steps to fall on that cross - proven by the final shot in the film The full death scene of Zena I'm sure there are more. "I saw what I saw when I saw it!"

Dec 10 11 5:23 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks for starting the list Dracs, there are indeed many more: Horror Dracula attacking a villager, the barmaid's daughter, after he leaves the castle and then comes suddenly back with blood on his mouth. Van Helsing arriving at the inn by early airplane. Dracula's savage attack on the village and Van Helsing setting fire to the village to destroy the population before they fully turn into vampires (which is why we never see the villagers again). All the full on bodice ripping, bared breasts, fangs sinking into necks, blood flowing and being drunk by Dracula attacks on Lucy and Mina. Dec 10 11 6:08 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If I were to come up with a plausible reason to explain ol' Drac's exit and re-entrance: Harker is not what he claimed to be, an innocent librarian... and he's not just a pain who might suspect something funky, having been bit in the neck and seeing a little Apache dance roughhouse the night before... he's a threat to Dracula's existance. That's not apparent from the business in the library, only when Dracula wakes up to the vampire woman's scream. With whom is this guy Harker working? Is this a trap? Is he in league with anyone else? Is there a mob waiting outside as back-up? OK: get up, go outside and take a quick look... then come back and take care of the two-faced little twerp. It's not all that tough. And really, it's no more ludicrous than inviting a real estate agent to come 1500 miles just to sign a contract, then immediately turning around and semi-vampirizing him and turning him into a frothing, giggling maniac-- which is going to be AWFULLY difficult to explain to the captain of the ship you're trying to board clandestinely.

Thus changing back to human form and coming down on Harker to rip the un-living sh*tt outta him.... "You can't smell any reefer, can you"?

Just reading this description of yours sounds so much more riveting than HOD! But obviously there was no problem explaining anything to the ship captain - because Dracula and Renfield did board the ship, and Dracula got to kill the entire crew along with the captain ("Captain dead -- tied to the wheel!"). Whatever his plan, it did work! (And Renfield was sometimes capable of putting on a more calm and presentable demeanor). By the way, the ship AND Renfield belong in the DRACULA story. Dec 10 11 11:13 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	So, as soon as he sees that the sun went down, he smiles, pops out of the sarcophagus, sees that it was Harker who had staked his wife, went over the various possibilities of what was happening or could be happening, decided on a plan which did not include ridding the imeadate threat to him (Harker), then stealthly made his way up the stairs and outside without Harker noticing to confront a threat he does not know exists; all in about 15 seconds. Quick of foot, slow of mind? Yes, you are right. There are ludicrous things in both the Universal and Hammer Dracula series and there are things I love and wouldn't change in either of them. Dec 11 11 7:32 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Some directorial choices in films just defy logic but make the film all the better for it. I'm thinking of the scene at the end of Spielberg's Close Encounters when the alien mother ship first appears. The vessel's shown rising up from behind Devil's Tower rather than the expected down from the heavens. It makes for a powerful and dramatic scene. Similarly, I think, Christopher Lee's appearance post-staking is all the better for him being at the top of the steps, dominating the vault. This and the fact that he's obviously just returned from nipping nip upstairs to the castle make sure he'd set his VCR to record Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein.

Film is mostly emotional response to visual/sound so logic sometimes loses out so long as it's not gone too far into silly where it distracts the viewer with a "wtf?" I occasionally think films wouldn't work without loopholes, if you tried to cover everything with logic you'd have a real short film or no film at all but it depends how big that loophole or illogic is. I'll have to think of an example of what I mean, too early right now.
