Nov 29 05 10:05 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was so surprised to not of seen a topic on this movie already in here but guess not every single one can be covered completley, I loved this film from start to finish, it was so refreshing see Lee play a role as the good guy, his acting was remarkable as ever still coming across with that power & presence what a great actor indeed, I also found it awesome to see the giant spider at the end and the Horse riding in and i thought the Devil in the form of Goat demos God was an outstanding effort to show the visible picture of the devil, of course showing the devil is a very difficult thing to do in terms with getting it right and pleasing to an audience but i thought it was a great effort and really dark from start to finish. Its always great to see the huge estates they shoot the hammer films in too i'd only dream of buying a house like them one day. Do other people think the devil was awesome in this film too ? The first time I ever saw it (under THE DEVIL'S BRIDE title) in the wee hours of the morning (the perfect time), it was very eerie and atmospheric. If I recall, it was Christopher Lee who brought author Dennis Wheatley to Hammer's attention. (They did two other films based on his works, TO THE DEVIL A DAUGHTER and THE LOST CONTINENT. Unfortunately, TO THE DEVIL had some of its ending cut that would have created greater impact, explaining that Christopher Lee's character could not leave the circle until a sacrifice had been performed.) There was talk, for a while, about a remake of THE DEVIL RIDES OUT, with Lee reprising his role. Alas, it never came to pass. Too bad Hammer never filmed more of Wheatley's work. Unlike TO THE DEVIL A DAUGHTER, I'm glad THE DEVIL RIDES OUT kept the period setting, especially given the interest in the spiritual world that was so in vogue at that time.

I would have loved to have seen a series with the Lee's Duc de Richleau character. The scene where Mocata hypnotizes Marie Eaton in their house is one of Terence Fisher's greatest suspense scenes.

Nov 30 05 1:45 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Totally agree, a series based on Wheatley's de Richleau character would have been most welcome. (Probably as much to Christopher Lee as to Hammer Film fans.) When there was talk of remaking it recently (with Lee coming back to reprise the Richleau role), the actor said that he was actually too young to have played the part back when he did, and was now too old (based on the character's age in the stories). It appears the new project has been scrapped. It was interesting to hear Lee's commentary on the DVD.

James Bernards score adds to the urgency of the tale and the whole piece is a masterclass in economical filmmaking. It's my favourite film on Devil worship with only Polanskis The Ninth Gate coming close .

Nov 30 05 7:19 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have to praise the casting of Nike Arrighi as Tanith, a very unconventionally attractive actress by Hammer standards. There's nothing mod or voluptuous about her and her look perfectly suits the time period. With her fantastic eyes, she conveys menace and fear perfectly. The satyr from the bacchanal sequence is probably my favorite cinematic representation of the Devil ever.

Dec 2 05 11:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I just got the DVD via the Amazon double feature deal and forgot there was a commentary on this one. Also one for RASPUTIN making it a double commentary DVD! I swear you hear the moderator and the other actress laughing at Lee as he interupts constantly with his observations and endless self promoting. They will be talking about something and Lee hears something that triggers a memory and he just starts spouting off before they have finished their coments. I love Lee, and cherish his commentaries, but this one is good for laughs too, as he is sort of off mic, and his comments at times come off like a near senile man off in the corner muttering to himself, oblivious to the comments of the the other two people in the room. Terrific film, and unintentional humor aside, a fine commentary.

Dec 28 05 1:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	John: You're entitled to your opinion and personal observation, of course, and I thought it was actually funny, but having been there, I can assure you, it was fun, not painful or embarrassing. Lee is and always has been very much the grand sengieur and a racconteur. During these two sessions, his prominence in those films and in the current film world was acknowledged without comment or acrimony. The three other performers were working actors (well, Barbara Shelley has pretty much retired), and Lee was the star. Let's face it, had it just been Lee on the audio track, it would have sold just as well; if it had been just the three other actors, there would not be as much interest except by us rabid fans. All four of them had a gas. There were laughs and smiles from the time they arrived to the time they had to leave. The gregariousness carried over to the arrival of composer Jimmy Bernard later, Roy Ward Baker, and Nigel Kneale. Yes, Lee was the centerpiece, but he did not force his way into the conversation. I sort of apologized to Francis Matthews after the recordings, since I knew him to be a very funny story-teller and he scarcely got a chance. He just chuckled and said, "Oh, that's Christopher."

Dec 28 05 7:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have to say Ted, when I listened to the Devil Rides Out commentary for the first time I found it slightly distracting when Christopher Lee moreorless commandered the proceedings. I appreciated that it was his sheer enthusiasm for the film and he is great to listen to when on form, but there were points where I felt he was talking right over what others had to say. That's Lee though. At least he is interesting to listen to - particularly in this case. Some of his recent interviews conducted by Marcus Hearn for the DD releases in the UK have been a little awkward - with Lee often talking on some tangent to the original topic or question asked.

Dec 29 05 11:24 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I won't argue, but will point out that on DEVIL RIDES OUT, the only other speaker is Sarah Lawton, and as sweet as she is, she neither seems to have a great deal to say about the film nor has a huge role-- good support, some great scenes, but this is Lee's and Charles Grey's film, really. Regarding steering the conversation back to point... well, yeah, there is that.

Dec 31 05 12:46 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Wasn't it Christopher Lee who initially brought the works of Dennis Wheatley to the studio's attention? (I think I read that in his autobiography, but it's been a while.) While Lee certainly has a lot of stories and memories to share, at times stealing the spotlight during the commentaries, one of the things I love about the commentaries he did for Anchor Bay is that we actually get to hear him do some of his impersonations on a couple of the DVDs...something I'd often read about over the years but had never actually had a chance to experience until then.

Before the recording of the FLESH & BLOOD narration, he regaled Cushing (and us) with wacky anecdotes in the voices of (among others) Noel Coward, Chuck Conners, Sylvester the Cat, Sir John Guilgud, Ralph Richardson... and Peter Cushing.

Love the Goat of Mendes incarnation of the devil during the pre-initiation orgy. Lee and Charles Gray's performances are top notch. Loved the "return to the circle" ending, too. I will definitely have to give this one another viewing soon. Didn't know that Dennis Wheatley also authored To The Devil, A Daughter (which I still think is a great Hammer flick). Unfortunately, all I was able to order was a VHS copy of the film, which obviously doesn't have the great commentary you guys are teasing about (same goes for my Dracula POD - VHS copy bought in the '90s). :^( "Wait Til You See The Full Effect With The Hump!"

It could be that for some reason either his own mic was not turned on, or that in laying the audio track on, the editor clicked off his track. The hollow effect is probably because Sarah Lawson's mic is picking him up.
