Susan Farmer is naive coquettish experimenter of sexual perversions. Charles Tingwell was a closet homosexual hoping for auto-asphyxiation(sort-of). Philip Latham was a sadistic dyslexic cutter, and Francis Matthews liked to drink and watch. Andrew Keir had to stay grounded in the "cloth"(someones got to be an anchor here) And Terence Fisher is the triple X master putting this all together,huh? It's all starting to make sense to me now. Guess this is where Monty Python got alot of their material.

If I've given you that impression, then you've misunderstood and I guess I could somewhat see how. But I have no doubts that the victim of a vampire is often sexually enticed, for openers. I basically see most (remember, this does not mean "all") vampires as basically sexually enticing the victims as a means to an end. But some movie vampires have been portrayed as sexually active (take Michael Pataki's horny grave-rapist from GRAVE OF THE VAMPIRE). This stuff began basically because I personally don't see any sexual intentions in Countess Zaleska's approach of Lili in DRACULA'S DAUGHTER, and also because I have always thought of Dr. Pretorius from BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN as a swishy but straight person who would find making a woman to be "really interesting". But now -- in WHITE ZOMBIE there is a scene at the end where Bela Lugosi (as Murder Legendre) tells Robert Frazer: "I have taken a fancy to YOU!" - and in this case, I think that could easily be taken as a gay thing. Ironically, some gay people I've talked to on that don't see it that way! So what can I tell ya? ---------------------- "It's MORE ... than a hobby!"

I know heterosexual men in real life (and characters in film) who are "swishy" (or "effeminate" or whatever word may be used to illustrate the stereotype) and they're not gay. It's as simple as that (and many gay men resent being portrayed in such a stereotype). As a heterosexual, even as a youth, when I watched Dr. Pretorius in BRIDE I never remotely thought of his wide-eyed interest in finding women 'interesting' as anything other than the way I found women intriguing myself. Since grgstv338 wants to post funny pictures and because he obviously is unable to refute the bunch of points I've successfully made -- about the gayness in WHITE ZOMBIE, about the fact that some effeminate men are straight, and that some gay people do protest to people immediately thinking any effeminate stereotype of a character on film is "automatically" considered gay.... what else can I do in this thread? Hmmmmm..... let's try doing something offbeat... like presenting my opinion of DRACULA: PRINCE OF DARKNESS ... Dracula., Prince of Darkness (1966) *** After not playing Count Dracula for a lengthy period, Christopher Lee stuck in his fangs and blood-shot contact eye lenses a second time for this direct sequel to "Horror of Dracula," which had been released a whopping eight years prior. In the interim, Hammer Studios had gone ahead without Lee for their "Brides of Dracula" sequel, which I'd say was arguably their finest vampire film of all. But that movie didn't feature the undisputed King of Vampires, and so Dracula properly returns here with Lee right where he belongs, in his most enduring horror role. Some rather likable actors (Francis Matthews, Barbara Shelley, and Suzan Farmer) play the latest group of innocents who somehow manage once more to stumble onto the grounds of an old castle (Dracula's this time) and they're met by a somber-looking servant who informs them that his master is dead. It soon pans out that these unwilling pawns are being marked to participate in the reviving and subsequent sustenance of the decomposed Count himself. It takes half the film's running time for Lee to emerge as Dracula, but once he does it's edge of the seat entertainment and worth waiting up for. The Count doesn't speak a word of dialogue in the film, but Lee the proud actor has always claimed that he would rather go the silent route than utter some of the words he had been instructed to say. As happens throughout the Hammer Dracula series, some elements of Bram Stoker's original novel crop up here. Thorley Walters appears as a fly-loving, Renfield-like loyalist to the master vampire, and there's also an inspired scene where Dracula cuts his own chest with his fingernail to entice a pretty victim to drink his blood. These tributes are welcome. And I can't leave out the intense Andrew Keir, who is excellent in the part of a strong-willed monk who scoffs at his superstitious parishioners but later must be the one to instruct the young hero on how to do battle with the Undead. ---------------------- "It's MORE ... than a hobby!"
