The term "zombie" is a bit of a misnomer when it comes to the Romero flesheaters. Romero himself never intended for them to be called zombies. They're more akin to ghouls if anything, and even that's a stretch since, according to folklore, ghouls are supernatural beings that eat the flesh of the dead (though they can certainly attack and devour the living as well).
