Apr 22 08 3:15 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Man, what I wouldn't give to have been able to see this when it ran with Prince of Darkness on the big screen. (And to have picked up the groovy Dracula Fangs or Zombie Eyes!) Plague of the Zombies is one of my favorite Hammer Horrors. All the cast members give solid performances, especially Hammer character actor extraordinaire Michael Ripper who gets a larger part than normal, much to the delight of nerdy fans like myself. As mentioned the graveyard scene is incredibly unnerving and the zombies rising out from their graves would set the standard for other zombie movies to follow. I believe that these zombies were also more decrepit than any other cinema zombies that had preceded them. What a great monster movie! I like to eat baby ducks!

I think Clare is the weak link in the cast, her merely adequate performance overshadowed by Morell, Carson, Pearce and Ripper. Not to mention the assorted zombies. She's okay in Whistle Down the Wind and The Haunting, so maybe I'm being harsh. Perhaps a re-viewing is in order.

Not only was she not very good, she was (I really don't want to be rude here) probably the least attractive leading lady in any Hammer horror.

The open grave scene where Jacqueling Pearce's face slowly changed before ZOIKS! her eyes shoot open!!!!!! was one of my biggest childhood scares, and one that has stayed with me ever since (obviously, or I'd have forgotten about it)... But yes, Andre Morell as Sir James Forbes is a dashing hero - more than a touch of General Melchett about him...."Well!" "Well Sah! Damn your britches man!" "Superstitious mumbo jumbo! Bah!" and so on and so forth... Pity about hiswimpy sidekick who he holds in such low regard he makes him stay at home looking after the lady folks while Sir J. goes out and toughs it on his own... Damn fine fun.

I find it interesting that even though I think Universal is the greatest monster studio ( mainly because they did a lot of things first), I find that many of the monster categories have a Hammer film as the best, at least as the most fun; Best Dracula (HORROR OF...), werewolf (CURSE OF...), mummy (Uh, THE MUMMY, even though the Karloff version may be a better movie, this one is the most entertaining for me), and zombie (PLAGUE)! I think FANATIC (DIE, DIE, MY DARLING) is the most fun psycho film to watch, too, even though PSYCHO is ultimately better. This is of course, my own humble opinion and I await the oncoming bashing!
