Nov 16 05 6:19 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have always said that if the FVK had been played completely straight and had starred Peter Cushing it would have been one of the best vampire films ever. Cut the goofiness and have the vampire killers be serious about their job and it would be great. The thing this film has going for it is the atmosphere. The snow covered landscapes and castle give the film something other vampire films don't have. Take out the unfunny parts (and most are imho) and you have a classic. Imagine this film with Cushing and Lee (though Ferdy Mayne really doesn't need to be changed). That would have been amazing.

Nov 17 05 9:45 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think it works very well as it is - and though I agree that it could have been a great "Hammer" vampire film too, it's so much fun that I hesitate to support the idea that they should have tried it straight... The atmosphere in this one is terrific; I've always felt that it works as a Hammer-style Dracula movie on many levels, and that's actually how I tend to watch it - I think it sits very well bracketed between Brides of Dracula and Kiss of the Vampire, for instance...

It is not a send-up of vampire films, or a "horror comedy," because unlike "horror comedies" it is actually funny. What it is is a dream-like fairy tale imbued with charming, subtle wit.

It's quite tedious at times, particularly in the last half, and I don't find it all that funny. It is very beautiful, though. Oddly, I feel much the same way about WHERE EAGLES DARE. As a serious vampire movie, it would need much tighter editing and at least three or four major action sequences. I'd love to see it, however.

I think it's beautifully made with a lot of inventive ideas--I'm especially fond of the sequence wherein Polanski runs away from the vampire who's after him, galloping around for sides of a balcony above a square, to end up right in front of the vampire again. But it's also slow-paced at times and the gags don't all work. Polanski himself, though, is terrific.

I agree completely about the gorgeous photography and atmosphere. Still, this is only a fair film at best. But at least it's different, and I think that's an important thing it has going for it. ---------------------- "It's MORE ... than a hobby!"

Without the humor, it would have been another run of the mill Hammer style vampire film. As it is, it's a very unique and wonderful movie.

There was a photo somewhere, probably in FAMOUS MONSTERS, of vain identical-twin vampires who primped on themselves by holding an empty hand-held mirror frame between them. I always thought it was a scene from FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS, but obviously not. Anyone know what it was from?

I think the backdrops are fantastic in this film and it really pulls you in to the atmosphere, there was a great shot just before night fall Polanski is walking across the top of the castle with a orange sunset in the backdrop, i watched this film again recently and i do think its a perfect film with attention to detail, Sharon tate in that beautiful Red dress,the dead dancing the list is endless if you thought which scenes stand out the most? I really dare to ask as i love that castle in the midlle of nowhere on the hill, does anybody have any idea where that castle is? the location? or is it part real and from the outside is it not real location maybe? im searching for the information but havnt had any luck yet, anybody have an idea? I don't suppose it's for everyones taste but I relish every minute. That cold winter setting was so effective, I'm surprised that more vampire films didn't jump on that backdrop.

No, there was a musical version of this a year or so ago , probably off Broadway. I have no clue how it did or if it ever did at all but it was supposed to be playing somewhere.

Everything I want from a Hammer vamp film and don't get is in FVK. Though I do like Horror of Dracula and Brides of Dracula fairly well, you can't beat a world class director dabbling in the same genre. The sense of isolation of a tiny town as an enclave of a society of vampires is absolutely palpable in this. Great DVD, too! I don't think it's a "perfect" movie (some of the humor is strained), but it is a very good vampire film. *Quote:* DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES is just the original European title. I find Polanski's gallop around the balcony square to be funny as I do the book-in-the-choppers bit. The ballroom sequence is opulent and dazzling. And what a beauty was Sharon Tate.
