It looks like I'll aslo be the lone dissenter as well. I thought this was one of the most ridiculous, laugh-out-loud, MST3K worthy genre films I've ever seen in my 40 plus years on the planet. And, that is said from someone going in without any expectations whatsoever. I will give it kudos for delivering a line of dialgue that has become my favorite of all time. Since I saw it on the original theatrical run, I'll paraphrase a bit and I may have the set-up out of order. The premise has them in a city that has been completely burnt out. Everything is charred and there is a constant downfall of ash. Okay, the whole idea is that you're in a BURNT city. The charcters are searching for clues or some sort of document in a burnt out building. As they are slogging through the reamains, one of the charcters says, "It looks like there's been a fire in here." Gee, ya think so? HAHAHAHA!! I laughed out loud - which I rarely do in a theater. Oh, and the twitching faceless nurse dance? Supposed to be frightening and disturbing? It looked like some 90 year old former Rockettes dancing on an electric floor. This one just didn't do it for me.

Wellllll, IIRC the premise was that the town was evacuated because of an underground fire in coal mines making the area uninhabitable due to the smoke. IIRC the hotel that they go to wasn't burnt where they first got into it, just deserted and kind of ratty. It was only when they got upstairs that they found the burnt room (behind the secret door painting). There was three levels of reality going on; IIRC the ash world was the in-between world. Wouldn't have helped if you had played the games, because Pyramid Head is from the second game and originally represents something specific out of the second game's protagonist's subconscious. In the film, he was intended to be a bogeyman, an anthropomorphic representation of the dark Silent Hill (whether he was created by Alessa to try and hunt the cult or if he's a creation of the cult's subconscious isn't really clear).

I might be misremembering but I believe either Avery or the director said that line was meant to mimic dialogue from the game. I think it's meant to add another layer of disconnect. At that point the main characters don't really know what happened in the town, or why. Playing the game I dug the atmosphere and sense of dread but I like how the movie made everything a bit more gothic. The echos of Salem witch burinings added another layer that I thought would really speak to monsterkids. Maybe it was too meta for it's own good? Most people were probably expecting a conventional monster horror movie. What they got was something different, a weird blend of metaphysical and gothic with no clear answers. Kinda ballsy for a mainstreamish horror movie, a mostly female cast that doesn't sell themselves as sex objects or teenyboppers.

Reed It is a misconception and yet countless movies depict witches (or rather accused witches) burned at the stake. Maybe not taking place in Salem but usually a group of Puritan-like folk with a mob mentality urging on a righteous burning. The myth and legend of it takes on a life of it's own. Besides, they did hang women which is pretty aweful itself. I just felt it was an inspired bit in the movie. Sorry if I offended any witches or warlocks out there. What are your thoughts on the actual movie?

Maybe not taking place in Salem but usually a group of Puritan-like folk with a mob mentality urging on a righteous burning. The myth and legend of it takes on a life of it's own. I haven't seen any recent, Puritan-styled films in which North American witches were burned. If there are some of these films, they should be castigated for basic falsification of history. If the films you mention (in general) are located anywhere in Europe or in England, no problem. I responded to the first thread on this film, buried way back in (probably) this folder, but for the record... I liked the opening sequence entering the town very much, but when everyone descended underground it became way to video-gamish for me, and I was not pleased with the nihilistic downer finale. So if I had to give it a grade, maybe D+ or at the most, C- ... Reed

Reed So you came into this thread, about a movie you didn't like, just to act like a wisenheimer about an off-the-cuff description I used? I think most people know what I meant. If I said, "It was cold like Santa Claus at the North Pole," would you feel compelled to educate everybody that there is in fact no Santa Claus at the North Pole? Do you honestly think anybody cares or that it contributes to the discussion? Realism isn't everything.

Reed While I get your complaint about the ending, oddly enough I didn't find the ending to be a total downer at the time; I think the implication with Rose and Sharon going home to Christopher could be taken that there is hope that they, at least, might have a chance of escaping the ash-world (I can't help but imagine a direct sequel with the same cast would have been about precisely that...not sure as the years between the original movie and proposed sequel grow longer that that's what we'll get).

There are a couple of videogame translations that I've changed my mind on after waiting awhile for second viewing -- the first two Resident Evil films, and (maybe oddly) the Doom movie. I doubt I'll ever give Uwe Boll's Alone in the Dark a second try, though. One of my reactions to this is based on what I felt was an obvious videogame structure -- going underground, room to room, etc. Reminded me at the time of D&D, which I loved to play back in the day, but the repetition didn't work well in film. And once the main Evil is conquered or subdued, that's it for a game, but a film has to figure out a satisfactory conclusion, and I wasn't (and still am not) sure what the finale of this particular film was supposed to represent (other than leaving some door open for a sequel). ...
