Well, let's see...there are twelve notes in the chromatic scale, so if there are four notes in the theme, the mathematical formula for variations would yield 12 x 12 x12 x12. That gives us 20,736 possible variations on a theme containing four notes. Of course, 1/12 of those would be the same theme played in different keys, so we might say that there are 1,728 different four-note themes possible.
