Jun 5 06 8:13 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Holy OCTAMAN! I used to see this 1971 clunker (with an early Rick Baker-designed monster suit) on TV as a kid. As awful as I remember it being, I had to have it on DVD! I just got it in the mail today! I'm about to pop it in the player and relive my youth. All I remember is that they show the obvious rubber-suited monster in the first ten minutes of the film and never stop showing it! hahaha Any other OCTAMAN fans out there?!

Essex called him in, said the movie was about a half-man, half-octopus, and could Barr come up with a good design? He didn't give Barr many more hints than that. So Barr designed a suit to be worn by someone crouching on an auto mechanic's dolly. Essex told him no, no, no, that's not it, he has to walk. So Barr tried again. (He's a very good artist, but has worked very little in movies.) Again Essex said no, no no. So what do you want? asks Barr. Essex points at a photo of the Creature carrying off Julia Adams. I want it so he can do THAT. Barr handed in a design of a man with an octopus for a head. Essex was thrilled.

Poor Pier, I can't help but think that making this turkey had something to do with her suicide. It had to be a depressing experience for the former starlet.

Sep 8 08 9:00 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm a friend of Doug Beswicks, who worked with Rick Baker on the suit. He has some interesting film footage shot in 16mm with Harry E. They are testing a prop tentacle that's used for grabbing people in close-ups and Harry is demonstrating, rather clumsily, how to "be grabbed" by the thing. Odd that no one has mentioned Kerwin Mathews being the star of the movie. Doug was a stop-motion animator and huge 7th Voyage fan and was excited to be able to meet and work with him. I meight have to see if I can get Doug to post on this site.

Sep 8 08 10:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	OCTAMAN will never be accused of being one of those disappointing monster movies that cheated you out of a good long damn look at the suit and good for them! You paid for the thing and somebody toiled away sculpting and painting it, so you might as well let it be seen to its best (or worst) advantage. Baker seemed to excel at this sort of filmic treatment,as THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN wasn't exactly shy about getting his putrid kisser on film. Hell,he was stutting his stuff half the time in broad daylight like the intro to" Highway to Heaven".The one Baker 70s monster i always loved but that you NEVER saw was the baby from IT'S ALIVE. I always wanted better looks at that creepy babyin the film,because it always looked great in the stills.

It's a completely silly steal of Creature from the Black Lagoon, but I remember many a weekend as a kid watching this on Saturday afternoons and loving every minute. "The important question is not, are there aliens on other worlds? No. The important question is, do they have ray guns?"
