I'm only going to say this once. I can never ... EVER, EVER ... have enough super hero movies. I will die a cold, meaningless, horrible death before I ever reach that state of mind.

Now, as to the first Fantastic Four movie. I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it had either ...

1.) Been made in the 90s

2.) Been a pilot for a tv show


In fact that's what the film really felt like to me. A very expensive television pilot. Was it abysmally bad? Well, no. No it wasn't. And frankly I thought the actual cast of Ben, Johnny, Sue, and Reed was pretty spot on. Johnny didn't look like Johnny and Reed was a bit too young, but their actors more or less nailed their roles so I'm not going to complain.

What I will complain about however is the film's portrayal of one, Victor Von Doom. Doom is hailed almost universally as the single greatest super villain ever concieved. He's a sorcerer and a scientist, a dictator and a member of the U.N., and a very complicated character. His past is tragic, his methods rarely straightforward, and you feel sorry for him because you know in his own mind he really is doing what he believes to be right.

In addition to his four Fanstic adversaries, he's fought Captain America, the Avengers, the X-Men, Thor, Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, and literally just about ever super hero in the Marvel Universe including guys you wouldn't think he would fight like Daredevil and Cloak and Dagger. In every case he's given each hero and each team of heroes a run for their money. Pick a list of the most evil villians in Marvel: Red Skull, Mephisto, Loki, and so forth. You know what they all have in common? They all respect Dr. Doom. The Devil respects Dr. Doom!!! Victor bleeds all that is awesom in villainy from his very pores.

And they got that guy from Nip/Tuck to play him? ... What ... the freakin' ... HECK!!!

That's what threw me off with the first Fantastic Four movie. I'll readily admit Doom was much better in the sequel, but everything about him was a massive Fail in the first movie. His scheme wasn't worthy of him, his intentions were petty, his methods crude, and he got beat way, wwwaaaaayyyyyy too easily.

Actually, he got beat way too easily in the second one too, but at least he was thinking bigger this time around.

I know this will never happen, but my FF Movie dream would be to have a movie that introduced the group and pitted them against a smaller foe. Puppet Master or the Skrulls or something. Then, you make a separate movie detailing Doom's origin. You can write the story of how he went from being a peasant boy to ruling Latveria with a literal iron fist. After that they can make a film that pits the FF against Dr.D in a clash of epic proportions. And epic must be the word! The Bad Doctor derserves it and so do his Fantastic Foes.

As for Willis as the Thing? Eh, I could see it, but frankly I'd rather have Chiklis again. He WAS the Thing so far as I'm concerned.
