As I've said in my mini-review of BEST WORST MOVIE, I've just had occasion to see both it and TROLL 2 in a special showing.
However, I haven't seen the original Beuchler TROLL in many years, though aspects of it stuck in my mind better than TROLL 2 did. I think I saw the latter on a doubtless-cut version on USA Channel or somesuch, so this last viewing of TROLL 2 was probably my first real look at it.
An observation:
Though there's no real connection between the two films, I'm tempted to believe that the husband-and-wife team who wrote TROLL 2 probably had at least seen the Buechler work. TROLL is about the titular monster taking up residence in an apartment building and beginning to transform the surroundings into a fantasy-world, including turning Sonny Bono into a "rainforest." The makers of TROLL 2 seem to have picked up on that one image-- a human being transformed into foliage-- and made that the centerpiece of their film. BEST WORST MOVIE quotes the distaff member of the team as saying that she made the trolls into plant-eaters because she had some mad on against vegetarianians! (One wonders why her trolls needed to change people into plants, rather than just their eating real plants, but I doubt one would've got an answer.)
Thoughts about the trollflicks?
