Apr 9 11 7:35 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I never heard of the columnist, Charles McHarry, so I Googled around and found this fun story in an old TIME magazine: << Buried deep in Charles McHarry's chitchat column, "On the Town," in the morning New York Daily News, was this item: "Ali Rounj Culdip, the Maharaja of Estarh, is due in next week for a medical checkup. The three youngest of his 15 wives will accompany him." There was not a word of truth to it. McHarry had planted the item purely as bait. That same afternoon, when it was reprinted almost word for word in a column in Hearst's New York Journal-American, McHarry had the rich satisfaction of hooking his fish. Annoyed by a rash of petit larcenies from his column, all committed by the Journal-American, McHarry invented the maharaja—Ali Rounj is an anagram for Journal (with an i added for the sake of Ali); Estarh is an anagram for Hearst. Then the columnist began chronicling the maharaja's doings. Two months passed before the Journal-American, which went right on lifting other McHarry tidbits, bit on Ali Rounj. "I'm pretty happy," said McHarry of his successful fishing expedition. Said a Journal-American spokesman: "We congratulate the Daily News on having had the phony item first." <

On the days it appeared, the page usually consisted of three gossip columns, the one by McHarry as well as one by Ed Sullivan and the Hedda Hopper column. In the former, there's a small jump cut during the cat fight, in an otherwise very nice print of the film. In the inferior AMC print, there's no jump cut, and the brunette shouts something that sounds like "I'll mash you on the butt!" I recently picked up a double feature DVD on Amazon, that has "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" and "Beast Of Yucca Flats" on it. My wife and I had a blast watching it after a good 2 years of not having seen it. And it is the version that has the brunette stripper saying "I'll mash you on the butt", just before the scene ends with "meow". The director must have just told them to improvise their dialog once they started rasslin, because, Man, what a totally dumb line. I thought maybe it was slurred and she actually said something that made more sense, but I wonder, because Blondie comes back with "oh, you just try", so obviously the brunette is making some kind of threat, and maybe it's just what it sounds like. Oh, one more thing. When Cortner goes to get Doris Powell, the figure model, to come back to the "country place" with him, after all the horndog camera dudes have left, she confronts him. He says "You don't remember me, Doris" and she retorts with "That's what every guy on the make says to me". Then he says, "I'm Bill Cortner." I MST3K'd her saying "Yeah, they say that, too". Thanks, Porf. If you thought it was worth a guffaw, then it makes it that much more pleasurable to me. My wife and I watched it again last night, and noted that in the scene where the brunette stripper interrupts Dr. Cortner and the blond ecdysiast in their tete a tete, Cortner at first looks at her then turns away as her comments get ugly. She grabs his chin and pulls his head toward her again, while saying "Come here, don't hide. You have the kind of face a girl doesn't mind looking at." But the way she delivers it is wonky. She says "don't hide" like it is an endearment (noun), like "dont-hide", which I am certain wasn't the writer's intention. She should have paused a beat after "Come here" and not run the two words together. Joe Green should have done another take, but by that time, they had probably gone through a dozen of them, judging from the totally convincing fatigue in Evers' performance at this point. He probably went "screw it -- it's as good as it's gonna get" and moved on. What do you think? I continue to be mystified and amused by "I'll mash you on the butt!"... I do know that she gave one of those weird "bad actress/good performance" things that all the women in the film manage to do. (Except Virginia Leith, who is genuinely good in it.) In fact, I think the way she delivers those corny lines of hers is hilarious. Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way. That's funny because I was telling my wife last night that people on the board are always dissing the stripper's acting in this scene, but I think, all things considered, they did pretty well. Their lack of polish comes off as "naturalistic." The only thing is, Bonnie Shari says some lines that I don't quite understand and that sound like they don't make sense. You may know which I am talking about. If not, I am going to get you to clarify those lines for me, BBP. TBTWD is beginning to get the edge somewhat on intermission ads for my go-to-sleep fare.
