The script actually indicated that this would be shot THREE ways: a clothed vesion for the U.S.; a slightly racy version (described vaguely--perhaps she was meant to be topless, but the breasts wouldn't be shown); and a topless version for Europe. MGM found the international version with the nudity, but wouldn't release it after the SWAMP THING fiasco.

MGM mistakenly released the international version of SWAMP THING which contained nudity in the Barbeau scene and the party scene. The DVD was labeled "PG", some mother complained and the disc had to be withdrawn and later reissued in the PG U.S. version. So after that MGM wasn't eager to release international cuts that contained extra nudity. A remastered version of the full-length U.S. cut of BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE was scheduled to be released on a double feature with DONOVAN'S BRAIN before the Sony takeover changed everything.

I happened to be in a store the day it was released, picked it up and set it aside at home, thinking I'd view it some rainy weekend. Then, I started hearing all the buzz over the DVD and that it was being pulled. It wasn't raining, it wasn't a weekend, but I quickly threw the disk on to see if the rumors were true. I don't understand, with all those DVDs pressed, they just didn't relabel the rating...there was/is certainly a market for the longer, uncut version. (Maybe MGM could get some lackey to sell the remaining inventory on Ebay.) Look at how many other companies release longer, unrated international versions of other titles, which have proved popular...and profitable. As for THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE...it would be nice to see a release that included all the alternate versions, much like the DVD of Naschy's HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB containing all three cuts of the film.
