Don't get me wrong, I love both films and I'm not trying to compare and debate one versus the other. They are both indispensible. This is just my own personal preference. Night has a claustrophobic creepiness - a nightmare quality - that has not been matched by any other film. But Dawn is horrifying in a different way. It presents us with the moment when the scales tip in favor of the zombies. I think the opening scenes (in the TV studio and in the projects) are so well done they blow me away every time I watch them. They portray society coming apart at the seams better than any movie before or since. And the uneasy feeling of snowballing apocalypse is palpable. http://www.necromerica.blogspot.com

The main disappointment of this movie is that due to budget cuts and the resulting script revisions, it isn't the grand finale to the trilogy that Romero, and his fans, had hoped for. Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.

Oh I think Dawn is a very worthy sequel and I understand (though don't agree) some thinking it's superior to Night. But after Dawn, I would agree with you: Day seems more of the same (people stuck somewhere trying to fend off the zombies again...) and Land positively shouts that Romero wants to keep making movies (any movies) but the "Dead" franchise is the only thing he could get funding for. Unfortunately.

Most non-anamorphic films (films that werent shot in Panavision, Cinemascope, or any similar process) are shot full frame and masking is added when they are projected. The aspect ratio of the newer, widescreen monitors is 1:77 (it is also a huge mistake, but thats a later discussion) so thats not a bad masking of most post 1950s films. It does represent a loss of image so to say that 1:85 masking of a print of any film adds information (as they often say in Video Watchdog reviews) yields more image is just plain wrong. Couple years ago I found the original script for Day and read it for the first time. What a great movie that could have been! The story was so vivid and evocative I almost felt like I was watching the film. It's a shame he couldn't make it. I think he did wonders with the budget he was able to get. Day has one of the bleakest views of humanity that I've ever seen. Almost every human character is hateful or critically flawed in some way. This is not a flaw of the film itself - but at the same time it makes it a lot less fun to watch (for me anyway). http://www.necromerica.blogspot.com

(04/11/06 4:21 PM) Vazec Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	As I think I've mentioned before here, NOTLD hit NY TV fairly promptly after its theatrical run -- this, of course, was long, long, LONG before the days of gore and nudity on local TV stations, all that stuff would be hand-spliced out of the print of any movie. Welllllll, somebody at NY's Channel 7 must have seen that it was in black-and-white and assumed it was old and therefore "safe," and just put it on the air, because it was 100 percent complete on TV in the late '60s or early '70s. That FIRST time, anyway. From then on, whenever Channel 7 ran it, not only was it cut, but the scenes of newsmen running around doing interviews, talking to the camera, etc., all had DRAMATIZATION (or something) superimposed over them.

The basic plot isn't that much different: a small community of surviving humans endeavors to find a way to train the zombies. What makes the script so much better is the characters are more real, more fully realized, and their losses are thus much more tragic. I am loath to spoil it even in unfilmed script stage, but I actually teared up over what happened to one character in particular, one that doesn't even appear in the filmed version. And the script's ending is one of Romero's best, if not THE best. It would've been the perfect ending for the "Dead" cycle. I used to think the graininess of the various editions I'd seen and/or owned added to the movie, but I have been proven wrong. This is the one to watch! And it's still chilling, whether it's your first or fifteenth viewing!
