(09/20/05 9:20 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Man ohhhhhhh man was I excited this past weekend! The Cinema Cafe here was advertising Night of the Living Dead starring Judith Odea and Duane Jones! I called the theater up to see how long it was running and the girl told me not to get too excited. They ordered the wrong print and they have the 1990 remake via Tom Savini........I twas sad. The remake was good but I REALLY wanted to see the original in all it's silver screen glory! So I popped in the Elite Millenium DVD on my day off and actually watched it with the Romero,Russo, Hardman and Eastman commentary. Im hoping they will reorder and get the original and show it closer to Halloween. They said it was part of their "horror classics" line of movies. Im hoping to see some more classics come through!

I still have occasional dreams of these things chasing me in my hometown. And I usually wake up during these dreams, they are quite disturbing. I've seen decent prints of this on the big screen. It's definitely a different experience than watching on tv. I've got the Elite Disc, autographed by Streiner and Russo, two great guys. It's the nicest print I've ever seen. I could actually see things in the nighttime scenes that I never could see before. I also have "The Complete NOTLD Filmbook" by John Russo, autographed once again by Russo and this guy... ...and a nicer ghoul, er, guy you'll never meet.

Carpenter's "Halloween" is still my favorite for some reason. I too have that NOTLD filmbook but alas it is not autographed! Ive always wanted to meet Romero, Streiner and Russo.......but ever since Russo created that horrid 30th anniversary edition he has gotten lower on my list. NOTLD is a true gem! One thing I didnt realize is that they originally shot this movie in 35mm? According to Romero in the commentary they shot on 35mm black and white. They were talking about how they had almost decided to film in 16mm color after they had started production but it would have proved to be too expensive. I see fate was working hard that day. I couldnt imagine this in color! Although I have seen the Hal Roach colorized version...........ugh.

THE EXORCIST is another, because of its religious implications. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD makes me feel claustrophobic, but it doesn't necessarily "scare" me anymore. Of course, if I were to watch it at home, alone, on a cold and dreary night, and some stray cat were to knock over the trashcan outside, well...

And are only now,just starting,to get thier due. I wonder,if the fands,about 30,regard these films,the way,the older generation looks at Hammer and Universal.

(10/02/05 10:17 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I spend a lot of time on the IMDb horror board,and I can tell you that the majority of 20 and 30 year olds regard the 70's as the golden age of horror.Thier enthusiasm for the genre is slightly misplaced,DAWN OF THE DEAD is rated higher than NIGHT,while HALLOWEEN and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE nearly always take first and second in every poll.These films are good,but certainly not the very best the genre has to offer.

(which they inevitably do, once they learn I write books on the subject), I usually answer either FRANKENSTEIN or NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Depends on my mood.

So much of this has to do with what artist John Byrne once termed a reader's (or a viewer's) own Golden Age, which occurs at age 12. While I might argue the exact age, I wouldn't argue the sentiment that we tend to favor those treasures we find early in life and hold them up in some kind of rosy, nostalgic haze for years thereafter, especially if there is anything of merit in them to begin with. Hence, I will always point to "Frankenstein" and "Dracula" as classics of horror's golden age, because I discovered them during my own "golden age." As much as I enjoyed "The Raven," which I watched at the ripe old age of 37 this weekend, I will never rate it as highly. This doesn't mean that we don't develop critical judgment as we age, but for many people, it's the material you saw first that makes the lasting impression.

When Elite was preparing its THX release of the film, they checked out putting a matte over it (1.66, 1.75, 1.85), but always crucial information was omitted, so they realized the film worked best with an open frame. Hope that answers your question, Skippy.

There is nothing better than turning out all the lights late at night and watching this true classic. After all these years this film still has a "creepiness" that can't be touched. I was lucky enough to see NOTLD on its premiere run on television in '72 I believe it was. This is the movie that introduced me to horror films, and remains very vivid as part of my childhood when Saturday nights used to show horror films on the local stations. Something has to be said for the popularity of this classic horror film with younger viewers who grew up in an age of "slasher" films. They're coming to get you Barbara..."

Completely picking nits here, but the "academy ratio" is actually 1.37:1. The aspect ratio of NTSC TV screens (and PAL I guess, too, for that matter) is 1.33:1. It doesn't sound like much difference (and in the grand scheme of things, it ain't), but since I've gotten a HD set (that allows me to see to the very side edges of an academy shot film), I'm surprised how much is cut off going from 1.37:1 to 1.33:1. It's more than I'd have thought. Back on topic: I use to have NotLD nightmares as well. The concept at one time seemed like THE cutting edge of horrible/frightening ideas (dead people coming back as cannibals); it seems less so now-a-days. Don't quite know why. Repetiton maybe? But I certainly understand why Danny Boyle in 28 Days Later, to make the concept more believable (and hence more frightening), did not make his "zombies" dead folks with a taste for flesh. The concept just doesn't work as well as it did at one time (for me, at least).

(04/08/06 2:00 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	One of the things that made seeing it in a theater as an 11-year-old kid so effective for me was that all of the adults around me were terrified. At one point I had to go into the lobby for a while and watch the film from a distance, standing at the door to the auditorium and peeking in. A grown man was standing there on the other side of the door doing the same thing. During the "eating" scene around the burnt-out pickup, we just looked at each other and shook our heads, aghast. And earlier when Ben finds a rifle and ammo in a closet, the entire audience burst into cheers. I doubt if there was anyone there that night who wasn't deeply affected by the movie. Rarely have I had such an intense "shared" experience in a movie theater. Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.
