May 13 13 6:04 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Some here might enjoy my review of Dumas' famous-but-hardly-ever-read-today novella THE CORSICAN BROTHERS, though be warned that I both discuss the ending and my own involved literary theories. I compared the novella with a couple of film versions but didn't have access to the most famous one with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. http://arche-arc.blogspot.com/2013/05/a-subcombative-corsican.html NATURALISTIC! 05/19/13 5:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	TARZAN THE TERRIBLE was terribly good! I don't know how Burroughs keeps topping himself each time. Some of this stuff (like the dinosaurs) are just ripe for a modern movie adaptation, even though the setting is post WWI Africa. Can't wait to swing into whatever the next one is. This extended Tarzan Centennial is shaping up nicely.

05/22/13 10:05 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Just finished the fantasy novel Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. I liked it quite a bit. Going to start Edward Lee's The Innswich Horror today. Lee writes hardcore horror, and though I saw the movie Header I haven't read any of his stuff yet. Just from thumbing through some other books I bought, I gather he doesn't write the most lyrical prose, but it should be interesting to see what he does with Lovecraft. A perfect Monster has no end...

05/23/13 10:25 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I finished The Spanish Holocaust, by Paul Preston -- a chronicle of true horrors. The first part of the book does a good job of explaining the tangled mess of politics, ideologies, and alliances that lead a modern European nation back into a world of inquisitions and medieval horrors, but the bulk of the volume is stunningly detailed and painfully repetitious -- a thousand dead in this city, hundreds of prisoners slaughtered in another. The author definitely seems biased in favor of the Republicans but he makes a good case for Franco's atrocities being a matter of policy rather than an inevitable outcome of war. The most interesting chapters to me were the last one and the epilog. The last chapter included the material Philip Kerr draws on in his newest, A Man Without Breath -- medical horrors perpetrated in an effort to "cure" communists -- the most grotesque kind of real-life horror. The epilog is full of accounts of what befell Fascists in later years after Franco's death and includes stories that apparently have already become folk lore, legends, and borderline ghost stories. Reading this book definitely enhances del Toro's Spanish films and provides excellent background for anyone wanting to understand the films of Alex de la Iglesia. Going to crack John Harwood's new one, The Asylum, tonight and if it's even half as good as The Ghost Writer, I probably won't put it down till I finish. Last Edited By: austex23 05/23/13 4:13 PM. 05/25/13 6:26 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Needed something to read in a pinch and grabbed the first thing that came to hand, which was H.G.Wells' THE TIME MACHINE. First chapter is remarkably faithful to the film, except that there's a third person narrator apart from The Time Traveler and Filby, presumably another dinner guest in addition to the ones we see in the film.
