Aug 18 10 6:09 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There's gotta be a thread for this but I can't find it. I just re-watched the movie with a pal, and then we also ran some of the DVD extras. One of them is a 1963 promotional record. At one point on the record, either Peter Lorre or Paul-Frees-imitating-Peter-Lorre reads the poem "The Raven." Is it Lorre or Frees? Opinions?

Always wondered why they didn't get Basil Rathbone for the role that went to Karloff. He seemed to be in better shape and had already done a couple of films. There's a wonderful spark between Price and Lorre. They play so well off of each other.

Remember the good old days when MGM had surveys and sent the poster reproduction of this film to those who particpated? Sigh... Aug 19 10 1:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I wish we in the U.K. had that extra on the dvd, but we only got the trailer. I cannot even think of replacing Boris with anyone in this film, it's first rate as it is. I met Hazel Court a couple of years before she died, and she spoke very highly of Boris, Vincent, and Peter, and of the immense fun it was working with them, saying she could not belive they were getting paid for having such a great time. And I think this shows through in the film.

Corman, I believe has related a few stories of the Poe pictures, and Sam Arkoff also. The memories of an accomplished actor as Nicholson would be enjoyable. Well I think he was a little conflicted. These obviously weren't the movies he was hoping to create, and he wasn't well at the time. On the other hand, he was grateful for the opportunity because he needed the money (to help support his daughter and all). Plus here he at least got to do some humor, which he always felt suited him best.

Jan 28 12 1:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Jack Nicholson has said that Peter Lorre was one of the most interesting people he'd ever met, and that he (N) learned to mark his script in a way that he noticed Boris would mark his. Pretty amazing at 25 to work in a movie with all three of those guys.

More than with most films, it's truly larger than life in a theater, a big theater, while the small screen diminishes its impact, makes it look cheap, which I guess it was. I find this often to be the case with horrors from that period, whether AIP or Hammer. Maybe it's the color. I don't feel that way about the old black and white classics, which seem to age better, look just fine on television.

It's a great film, but even better on the big Screen. Another is Pit and the Pendulum, it really must be seen on a big screen. The one word is Awesome...
