Aug 16 10 9:13 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Not so much asking what was the first monster/horror film you saw, though it might be the same answer but what movie hooked you? What got you to go to the drive thru, watch Creature Feature, collect FM, (or VHS and Fangoria or DVD depending on your age). For me it was borrowing Frankenstein and Dracula from the library when we got a VCR in 1987. I had heard about these movies, but this was my first actual experience watching them, and it hooked me for a long time.

Aug 17 10 6:29 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The first movie I ever got really hooked on was STAR WARS. I got into SW just as the Special Editions were being released in cinemas, and it was a brilliant time to become a SW fan. As for classic horror, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN was the movie that got me addicted. I had seen KING KONG and fell asleep during DRACULA, but after taping BRIDE off of late night TV, I was utterly hooked. I must've watched that VHS tape a hundred times. Aug 17 10 6:55 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I tried out my local Creature Feature show in the early seventies, but couldn't make it through THE MUMMY (not the best classic Universal to start with when you were a kid). However, the next week they showed THE INVISIBLE MAN, and that got me hooked. No, my friend, you haven't seen everything that can happen to a cow. That would be scientifically impossible.

Aug 17 10 8:17 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I saw Star Wars upon its release in 1977. I remember I was spending a weekend with my family at my grandparents house in North Carolina. My brother and I were watching a Daleks episode of Dr. Who (this was the first time I had ever encountered the good doctor) when my Dad announces that we were all going to the movies to see Star Wars! Woo hoo! At this time I was just starting to really become familiar with monsters like Frankenstein, Wolf Man etc. and so I was really soaking it all up like a sponge. I have to say that Star Wars really kicked me into a good gear but it wasn't until a year later in the second grade when I saw the super 8mm digest of The Thing From Another World that I can honestly say I was hooked. I remember that night clearly. My school was having a Halloween party in the cafeteria. I was dressed as a mad scientist. Some of the classrooms were used for games and activities and the cafeteria was set up like a movie theater complete with a snack bar! We had a costume contest with a costume parade. It was a great night! The double feature was the above mentioned Thing and Incredible Shrinking Man. The Thing really hit me and that was the movie that did it for me. I'm not insane -- my mother had me tested.

Aug 24 10 10:02 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I saw my first horror film at five, THE THING THAT COULDN'T DIE, and was hooked. In quick succession, I fell in love with TARANTULA and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA ('43). Then came "Dark Shadows", which I watched religiously for four years. I didn't see a copy of Famous Monsters until I was nine (ironically, the issue that announced the death of Boris Karloff). Sadly, that was also the last issue that my local bookstore carried. For the next 10 years, I was only able to get FM and The Monster Times when my family went out-of-state for summer and Thanksgiving vacations. The first horror film I saw in a theatre was HOUSE OF WAX ('71 rerelease).

Aug 26 10 7:17 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'd been a "casual" Monster/movie fan since seeing DRACULA at a young, pre-school type age. Caught the monster movies when and where, picked up the mags if and when, built the kits --- pretty casually. The 'turning point' came as a young teen (or 'tween', as they say now). My parents had a tv in their bedroom, and for some reason I spent the whole day in there once, minus chow breaks ~~ I don't remember why, it was a Saturday, guess I had nothing better to do. I watched THE SEVEN SAMURAI on the local 'educational' (pre-PBS) station, which took all afternoon. Stuck around for DINOSAURUS. Which segued into some 'women in prison' picture from the '50s, and finished up with the topper, LOST HORIZON on the Late Show, which just blew me away. Looking back, I'd gotten a full cinematic smorgasbord all in one go: foreign 'art' film, shlock melodrama, 'B' movie monster, and 'A' film Depression-era fantasy. First time I'd sat through multiple films back to back in one day, much less all 'shadowy' black and white ones. And man o man, I was hooked.

All watched at the drive-in (as a small child) during the great '56 - '58 monster cycle.

Not to the levels that I would become, but more than enough to introduce me to our local Fright Night Late Show, which we would watch religeously every Friday night from my earliest childhood memories. With the first film that I can remember watching being Bava's classic BLACK SUNDAY. Another way in which I was heavily influenced was by my parent's love for the drive in. During the warm weather months, they took my two older sisters & myself to the drive ins in our area constantly. With the majority of our viewing being genre fare. And, oddly enough, my first memory of such being an AIP triple feature of THE RAVEN, THE TERROR & Bava's BLACK SABBATH. Meaning, of course, that Mario Bava had a massive impact on my life & my tastes in films for the next four plus decades. And beyond. As he's still, to this day, one of my very favorite directors & atmospheric horror is, by far, my favorite type of film.

Aug 29 10 12:51 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	In addition to Fright Night, we also had weekend afternoon & early evening movie showcases that were staples here for B uffalo for many years throughout the '60s & on into the early '70s. Among them were the Big Show of the Week & A Movie For A Sunday Afternoon. Which very often featured genre fare like all the Harryhausen epics, KING KONG, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG, DINOSAURUS, THE MONOLITH MONSTERS & a wide array of other monster, sci fi & imagination stirring films that no like minded kid from that era could live without. And, if it weren't those, then it was usually some Jerry Lewis comedies or better yet, Elvis movies. So, as you can imagine, a LOT of my weekend was spent in front of the television set. LOL Then, sometime in the early '70s, our local channel 2 added the Money Movie. Which quickly became a fav at 4:00 every weekday. They regularly had theme weeks that showcased genre fare seemingly about half the time. With Monster week, GODZILLA week, PLANET OF THE APES week, sci fi week & more. Good times! Sure, after a couple of years they'd run these cycles of films so often that you could recite them line by line if you chose to, but that was cool. It was part of the fun IMO.

I'm not insane -- my mother had me tested.

Aug 31 10 1:24 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The first ones I remember seeing on TV, when I was little enough to be sitting in my mom's lap, were THE CYCLOPS and BEAST FROM THE HAUNTED CAVE. Both were scary, but THE CYCLOPS terrified me. Later my mom took me to the theater to see JACK THE GIANT KILLER and that really did it. I was mesmerized, enthralled, thrilled beyond measure the whole time. After that I started catching the wonderful Universal classics on TV, which were actually SCARY back then, along with all the other great horror and sci-fi flicks I could find. Mar 1 11 6:19 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	While I had seen and loved monster movies before this, It was the 7th VOYAGE of SINBAD that jerked a knot in my brain. ( I saw 7th VOYAGE 10 times over a three month period in New York City!) I was so in love with the fantasy creatures in that film (and dinosaurs in ANY film) that the images of Ray Harryhausen (and the paintings of Charles R Knight) inspired me to be an artist and make doodles like this Cyclops painting I did over a decade ago.
