It's one of my favorite sci-fi movies. I agree with those saying Mantee represents the everyman and looks like an actual astronaut. I thought he was great.

Note that the manta rays are definitely NOT upside down. But it does look like they added a buldge to the belly for the ray projectors.... Also, in watching the film again, I'm reasonably sure that these ships were photographed, and then animated on a animation stand, similar to an OXberry, or possibly a custom rig... The lack of perspective shifts, and the way they seem to be static matted into the live action scenes makes me think that they were probably done this way to cut down on the "blue halo" they might otherwise have had, if they'd been shot on a bluescreen, or miniature stage.... Sep 1 11 1:23 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Mind I know to other than SF film enthusiasts, such as the good members here, most consider RCOM a 'B'-movie at best, it in my opinion deserves some recognition in the form of classic 1960s Aurora-style model kits. A nicely detailed model of the Mars Gravity Probe mothership with detachable landers (MGP-1A & MGP-1B) would have been well received, at best if only an upscaled MGP-1B with astronaut figure would have been most acceptable. Or in the fashion of individual 'paired' figure kits popular back in the day, why not Paul Mantee in full astronaut gear with Mona on tow and Victor Lundon as Friday with a set of removable slave bracelets an added accessory.

And it only comes with two of the smaller war machines (squaring off against a pair of tanks). Great idea using that kit for a RCOM diorama; you'll have to share the finished results here.
