Dec 2 10 4:01 PM More My Recent Posts	Recently, a very dedicated SF fan republished THE FANTASY FAN, a highly influential fanzine of the mid-1930s. There were only a few issues, and now they're all here, in a boxed set. Forry was a busy contributor to the zine; it's where some of his feud with Clark Ashton Smith and H.P. Lovecraft played out. I was amused to see that even at 18 or so, he was already using some of his neologisms, in this case, "Karloffornia."

Dec 6 10 4:17 PM More My Recent Posts	I just learned something that surprised me, thanks to the diligent research of Chris O'Brien, author of the upcoming (and very thorough) bibliography of Forry Ackerman. The Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society began as the Los Angeles chapter of the Science Fiction League, a nationwide club started by Hugo Gernsback in one of his professional magazines. The first LA meeting was held in the garage of the Test family, with young Roy Test Jr. the member who organized the meeting. This was before Forry returned to LA from San Francisco, so there were a few meetings before he began attending. At the recent banquet celebrating the anniversary of the founding of LASFS, the special guest was Roy Test, Jr. He'd drifted away from the club in the late 1930s. A theater showing a revival of KING KONG, teenaged Ray Harryhausen was impressed by the collection of stills on display, and asked an usher if he could copy them. The usher said they weren't the property of the theater but of Forrest J Ackerman, and gave Harryhausen Forry's address. The usher was Roy Test, Jr. The fanzine listed on this page has the first mention of Test in this regard that I've seen, and the quote is from VoM, Forry's zine: http://www.efanzines.com/FWD/FWD9.htm#5.NAM Unfortunately, Roy Test died not long after the banquet. Dec 25 10 11:49 PM More My Recent Posts	Word is that the first printing has sold out. Amazon's listing has three reviews - two by fans (one of them is Sean Fernald's wife) and one by nonfan. The nonfan says that it's poorly written and chocko with errors, and the fans say it's monsterrific, and that if you loved Mr Science Fiction, this is the book for you! It may even be filled with ghoulish goodies! If the book had been presented as a memoir, less narrative with anecdotes from friends, that would be fine. But the cover says "The Life of" - it's written by a fan, for fans (and you could even say about a fan). The 4e adherents are all rallying around it, saying how much Debbie loved 4e. If love of your subject translated into critical faculties, then this would be to 4e what the Richard Ellman biography is to James Joyce. One thing the derogotory Amazon review says which is questionable, criticizes Deb for trying to reconstruct the history of early science fiction. Anyone writing extensively about 4e should do that, because his life 1926-mid 50s IS the history of early science fiction. And those five essays at the end of the book, one of them by her live-in boyfriend and none by anyone who knew Forry well --- jeez. "As one left the kitchen, one entered the dining room."

Dec 26 10 1:55 AM More My Recent Posts	Even Sean Fernald's wife Silke lets her mitigation seep through her effusive review: "Much in the spirit of Forry himself, this book is a 'kitchen sink' bio that mixes historical information with anecdotal snippets from Debbie and others who knew Forry best. Anyone who is looking to take themselves, the subject matter or Forry himself too seriously should look elsewhere for entertainment." And the "others who knew Forry best" seem mostly like the people she could get hold of, rather than people who actually knew him well. The one un-positive review points out that the book has more than its share of typos and errors; what do they do at McFarland nowdays-- nap? Joe Moe give it a warm reception on the FMFL site, but even that is mitigated. "The book itself is written in a stream-of-thought style in some parts, which can be a little distracting, but in general, there is a lot of information here." It, or inflated, sure could be used to describe the relationships of the people "who knew Forry best." Meeting someone a few times at conventions is not the same as knowing them. The last 15 years have carried off a good number of close 4e friends - from nut cases like Terri Pinckard to the original sci-fi'ers like Moskowitz, Schwartz, De La Ree, Jack Williamson, Charles Hornig. This makes interviewing Bradbury or Bill Warren even more critical, which to my knowledge DP did not do.

She never spoke to me; it's entirely possible I have never met her--I have no memory of doing so. She could have talked to Dave Kyle, June Moffatt, Len Moffatt or many others. The book does have numerous errors; the ms should have been run by someone who knew fannish history and/or Forry better than she did. The book is in chronological order; I was disconcerted, therefore, when Wendy's death comes at almost exactly the halfway point. I do not like to disparage what's obviously a labor of love, but I do think she submitted this for publication before she should have..
