Kolchak, we have abundant proof that Zombie's HALLOWEEN was cruddy; but all the advance screening word on STAR TREK has been not only "not cruddy," not even, "eh - o.k.," - but "wow - surprisingly good." May 6 09 11:44 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was prepared to hate this ( as I do most all new genre movies, sequels, reboots and remakes), but after sitting through a premiere last Saturday, I have to admit that I found it very entertaining. So did my guests. No major complaints about anything, really... and not many "cringe-worthy" moments at all... and this review despite having to sit in the fourth row! A new Trek TV series, done with a more modern sensibility in terms of storytelling (wider cast, longer story arcs, etc) could do wonders for it, especially if freed from the constraints Roddenberry imposed in the TNG era.

What I DO have a problem with is one aspect of the script I've read about. In the film, Kirk is said to be given command of the USS Enterprise and the rank of captain immediately after graduating the academy as an ensign. If so, this is UTTER BULLCRAP. Not from the standpoint of "series canon", mind you -- just simple, basic, LOGICAL military protocol. NO EFFING WAY. Kirk magically skips over at least four ranks and gets a major ship command without paying his dues? NO, NO, NO, NO, NO! IMPOSSIBLE. I could only imagine all the career Star Fleet officers resigning their commissions in disgust... So, I had to toil for 10, 15 years to make Lt. Commander rank, and you give this young wanker captain's pips and a starship? SCREW YOU -- I'M OUTTA HERE. I thought this was a professional military organization! It would be IMPOSSIBLE that Kirk could be a student at the same time as Sulu, Checkov, Uhura, McCoy, or Scottie. He is a Commander when Checkov is an Ensign, Sulu and Uhura are Lts, Scottie is a LCDR. Not possible in any universe, not even fantasy. So I hope that is not the scenario presented. Even if given a "battlefield" promotion, which would be temporary, that would not explain the huge gaps between the ranks of his fellow officers. Today is only Yesterday's Tomorrow.

Abrams reboot, here is another possible show-stopper for your intellectual assessment -- Zoe Saldana's cup size is nowhere near as large as Nichelle Nicholls. Maybe you can convince Abrams to digitally enhance the Uhuru character in the next iteration. ... Reed

Yeah, that whole scenario was pushing the boundaries of believability. But stranger things have happened in the real world, and if we were to go through the time it would have taken to show Kirk ascending to the Captain's chair the good old fashioned way, this two hour movie would have been in three installments, three plus hours each, and directed by Peter Jackson. And boring. If I wanted that, I'd sit through a Voyager marathon. Blech. Is the new Trek movie perfect? No. Is it good? Yes. As good as Wrath of Khan? IMHO, no. But it beats the crap out of the majority of Trek movies and post-original series episodes. I'm looking forward to seeing more from this team, and I can't say I've felt like that since awaiting The Voyage Home back in '86.
