I saw this at a ten o'clock show on Friday night.
Never read the King novella (though after seeing the film, I definitely want to check it and the 3-D audio adaptation out) so didn't really know what to expect going in, though I had heard that it was slightly Lovecraftian, which is right up my alley.

That said, I loved it and think it's one of the best sci-fi/horror films I've seen in a long while.

It's definitely got a 50's giant bug/end of the world genre vibe to it.
The ending is grim, haunting and tragic in a Twilight Zone kind of way, and the film has really stuck with me over the past couple of days since I've seen it, unlike a lot of movies that I immediately forget as soon as I step outside the theater.
This is a real MONSTER movie, and a potent reminder that some monsters aren't always of the tentacled, creepy-crawly variety (though it made this arachnophobe get the heebie-jeebies more than once).

There weren't a lot of people in the theater, maybe 20 or so, so it wasn't packed, but it's been a while since I saw a movie where people in the audience jumped, gasped, laughed and applauded at the action on screen, really getting involved to the point of talking back to the movie--maybe because it was a later, Friday show. There were a few points of unintentional laughter at the ludicrous situations the characters find themselves in, and one point where people actually applauded the death of a central character at the hands of another.

I thought the ending was great, if heartbreakingly tragic. I don't know what I would have done in that situation.
The characters had lost all hope--the Mist had no end, and the appearance of the "impossibly tall creature" perfectly illustrated in a few melancholy and awe-full frames that the world they had all known had seemingly ended--human beings' time on this planet had passed, and the monsters had inherited the earth.

I'm not sure why this wasn't released BEFORE Hallowe'en though--The Mist is really not a holiday, family friendly movie (it's like the Anti-"Enchanted") so I'm not sure how long it's going to be in theaters, but if you're interested in seeing this, go before it gets pushed out by The Golden Compass and other newer flicks. I'd like to see this again on HD DVD some day, but I'm definitely glad I saw this on the big screen with an audience.
