Nov 21 07 1:39 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It was defnitely a mistake to think that the open ending could not work, and THE BIRDS is a good example to cite. For me, I found the ending a culmination of everything that had been going wrong with a movie that started out strong, then faltered along the way until it finally fell flat on its face. I'll wait until most people have seen it before I toss a couple of questions out there. But disappointed with the ending. Should have left the ending that way it was. "What is the Law!"

Nov 21 07 8:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Saw it. It's a very respectful, carefully-considered adaptation, not a big surprise coming from Darabont. I'm not all that crazy about King's story, but there it is, up on the screen (with an additional beat to send you away on ). As I had feared, both the design and execution of the effects were problematic for me. They've got a nifty aesthetic - all Harryhausen ambulation and "Outer Limits" scary faces, colored like fluorescent bruises. Which basically means they stick out like a sore thumb in the flatly-lit, 'this is happening' world of the film. They're really rather fanciful, and that was obviously Darabont's intention, but I'm not sure he thought this through to the logical conclusion - that audiences might simply reject the effects as poorly done. It doesn't help that there are some issues in execution as well, namely mediocre creature compositing into shots that are otherwise well-designed in anticipation of their inclusion. I'd imagine that those better-disposed toward the story might find the film rates higher in their estimation. I liked it ok. - Jeff

"Fluorescent" was overstating the case - as you're right, the dominant tone is a sort of chalky gray, with the bruised coloring I referred to mostly either an undertone or a highlight. There's definitely a purple thing going on - they have a putrescent quality that's meant to repulse. I grabbed a few shots from the trailer to illustrate, and have linked to rather than present them outright for those who might like to discover them in context of the film. And so as not to provide those given to spurious complaints with a legitimate gripe about spoilers. Beasties from THE MIST - Jeff

Nov 22 07 8:21 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I thought the effects were exceptionally well done, among the best of this kind of effect so far--and it wasn't even an outrageously expensive movie ($17 mil). I also liked the scene in which the bugs arrived in a horde, one at a time, on the supermarket windows--it wasn't shot or scored as a Big Scare scene, but rather to be eeire and unsettling, even slightly beautiful. I thought this was an imaginative touch.
