"The Innocents" - in Miss Gidden's imagination?

In a short story/novella/novel you can be deliberately vague as in the narrator saying "I spied a figure." That could mean the narrator was mistaken or saw someone or really saw a ghost. In film we see the damned ghost too. If you are upfront about the ghost being "real" then the film becomes Topper … you know, charming supernatural antics and no horror of dealing with spirits of the dead. Obviously this is not a hard and fast rule. In the BBC TV movie The Woman in Black we clearly see the ghost, we suspect she's a ghost from the get-go, and it doesn't become a charming Thorne Smith comedy … it remains quite terrifying. So in The Innocents they were quite clever in setting up the whole "is Miss Gidden imagining this or not" scenario while maintaining considerable ambiguity. After all the same film could be interpreted as the ghosts are real. Ghost stories are a difficult balancing act and tend to work better in short form. The little vignette in Dead of Night involving the ghost of the little boy still works for me quite well even though there is no conflict or resolution to the story. opticalguy1954@yahoo.com (Spencer Gill)
