Saw THE AVENGERS this afternoon in Melbourne and I enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting to, since I'm a little burned out on all the Marvel movies - it's not a great film per se, but it's a great comic book movie, certainly the best thing from Marvel Studios since the first IRON MAN back in 2008. The expected awe-inspiring special effects thankfully come accompanied by some genuinely witty dialogue that often pokes fun at the absurd characters and situations, but never in an overly obvious or groan-inducing way. It’s clear that the jewel in Marvel’s crown is Robert Downey Jnr’s Iron Man - one wonders what the studio will do when the nearly 50 year-old Downey is forced the hang-up the armour for good (possibly after IRON MAN 3?). Mark Ruffalo is also good as Bruce Banner, and this is probably the best live-action realisation of the Hulk yet (though personally I preferred Ed Norton’s Banner). Tom Middleton’s Loki proves a suitably menacing villain, reminding me at times of General Zod (Terence Stamp) from SUPERMAN II.
However, as much as I enjoyed watching THE AVENGERS, I have to say that the trailer for Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS blew it completely out of the water. I’ve been impressed and excited by practically everything I’ve seen and heard about PROMETHEUS so far, and finally seeing a trailer for it on the big screen has only amped-up my anticipation.
