My memory is a little cloudy, but I think it was on AMC, back when that station was cool. And in it, they had a list of the top ten most sought-after lost films ever made, and London After Midnight was number eight. To be honest, that is the clearest thing I remember about the whole documentary, and to tell you the truth...THAT IS COMPLETE BULLSHT! I have heard so much talk about this lost Lon Chaney film, and how much so many people wish it would turn up someday (myself included), there is no way in hell that LAM is NOT the holy grail of lost films. People OBSESS over this legend! I was caught up in it too, at one point. You're right, rvoyttbots, had it been among the newly-discovered titles, I'm sure the entire friggin' world would have heard about it. Then again...maybe they just haven't finished looking through all of them By the way, for anyone who is interested, the number one film on that list was the lost...twenty-something hours of Erich VonStroheim's Greed.*

The way the story is worded it could be interpreted to mean that only these films were deemed worthy of preservation, implying that there were others not worth the effort. And what about partial reels or films with missing reels? Anyone know?

Jun 9 10 9:27 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I heard someone on NPR speculating that there could be more such treasures hidden in NZ and the surrounding region, because that was pretty much the last stop, end of the line for international distribution. By the time a movie made its way to New Zealand in 1920, it was several years old, considered played out and perhaps worn out. Distributors were often reluctant to pay to have a near-worthless-to-them print shipped all the way back form the other side of the world and included instructions to simply destroy the prints when they finished their run. Of course, many projectionists and theater owners simply squirreled them away. The distributors would never know and wouldn't care all that much anyway. Jun 9 10 12:32 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There was a huge cache of silents discovered in the Yukon (Dawson City) in the late '70s/early '80s (the French short BALAOO was among them). That city, too, was the "end of the line" for theatrical showings. But none of the films were complete, and each had (at least) one reel missing. It was concluded that any complete prints were shipped back to the studios; but the incomplete prints were discarded on site... which, in this case, meant burying them beneath the permafrost. I should also add that none of the films in the N.Z. collection are in good condition. Over 50% of them are suffering from severe nitrate decomposition. Last Edited By: PhantomXCI Jun 9 10 12:35 PM. Now, I suppose that it's o.k. to tell you that I contributed the video to a distributor of silent pictures a little after that. Although it's not Kino or Flicker Alley or anything, the fellow puts out a pretty decent product. He had been planning to do a DVD compilation with some other early fantastic films on it but so far it just hasn't come to fruition. Can't tell you much more at the moment.
